Order of upgrades.

Postby barryogen » Thu Apr 26, 2007 3:27 pm

I have some plans for my 2001 corolla(FWD 2zz-ge), and from thinking about it, think they should be in the following order(loosely/subject to change).

LSD(TRD unit)
Brakes(0800 Racebrakes, slotted and better pads)
Engine management(Apexi Power FC and datalogit) + tuning.
Turbo setup and all that entails(mostly custom as RHD turbo conversions are few and far between) + tuning.

The only thing that really annoys me with the RunX is that it is a single spinner, so an LSD is going to be installed first... but while the engine is out, what else should I do to save hassle/plans/heartache with future plans? or does it sound like about the right order?

Brakes are being done prior to any serious changes in power output, as I'd rather be able to stop, than not(simple understandable priority really).

your thoughts guys?

LSD
Brakes
Swaybar
Shocks/springs (dunno what you've got already)
Operation Lightweight.

Those mods alone will give you a quick track car...

As for turbo's and ecu... I can imagine that getting expensive quickly
http://www.turbo-kits.com/celica_turbo_kits.html for a bolt on kit but I wouldn't think you would be doing the same for too much less unless you is the master of fabrication and have all those bits already.

I'd put suspension at the top of the list, shocks, springs and definitely sway bars and bushes.

Then brakes.

on that note maybe an uprated clutch if you're going down the turbo route? be easier to do it at the same time.

There's a runx on trademe at the mo that is being sold by a dealer (cant get the listing damn work blockers  ) but it was white from memory & they could supply turbo & supercharger kits, might be worth investigating to see what theyre like. Rather than buying a full custom job.

If your taking the gear box out then maybe consider:

Heavy duty clutch
Lighter fly wheel
Braided clutch line
Upgraded clutch and master cylinder if necessary or recondition?
TRD Gear set to go with the TRD LSD?

Swaybar is a TRD unit, about as stiff as I would like to go, can make it a three wheeler if cornering spiritedly already.
Shocks and Springs are TRD sportivo parts, nice level of stiff and comfort, but not really track parts.
Weight is a good point... might tackle that sooner rather than later.

The Turbokits that are available are all for the LHD version, and most will not fit due to various reasons depending on where/who you ask.

Supercharger kit from either Blitz($8k + install) or Greddy($5k + install and tune) are too expensive for what amounts to a bolt on part with limited improvement in performance(30-50HP), and running boost on an 11.5:1 compression ratio isn't usually considered to be a wise idea.

heh, dunno why I left clutch off that list, it was intended to do it while they do the LSD anyway.

The flywheel is a 13lb one, which appears to be about as light as you go in street cars.

Thanks guys, handy to know your thoughts... keep them coming if anyone else wants to comment.
