Reshelling a pre 96 import (can I change over the odometer)?

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Thu May 03, 2007 12:09 pm

Im thinking of doing this, with a *cough*mitsi*cough but the mmc forum doesn't like to share info as much as Toyspeed :)

What I would do is import a non compliable pre 96 car then transplant all of the good bits into a NZ reg'd shell then certify it.

What I was wondering is, can I put the odometer from the import in then get it cert'd like that? Or will it cause problems since the km's are recorded at each WOF check?

Cheers

the way i see it.....what you are wanting to do is no different from average joe bloggs getting a new / second hand unit for their car off trademe & throwing that in.

Have a chat to Distrb though cause he swapped over this in his Tezza  pretty sure he just unbolted & then bolted in

Pfft why would I want to talk to that dick? /will do

Main concern is that the import is likely to have way less k's than the nz shell.

I see your first point :P

yeah thats a point.....but then you take the KE as an example & I highly doubt the OD is the original one, usually they get swapped at some point in time, haven't had issues with that.

You could also have a word to the Greekman...given his daily job

Swapping the speedo isnt 'really' an issue, it just gets highlighted if you do one of those online vehicle look ups.

Playing with the speedo numbers isn't as easy as it looks...

swapping the speedo isnt the concern

itll be the body your putting it in

reshelling is a bs term
you cant reshell monoque car!

so you need to talk to the authorities about that

Monocoque you mean?

What do you mean BS term, all Im talking about is taking a 4wd Lancer of the same year/shape, strip it, then swap over all of the evo go go bits then get is cert'd as a Lancer with evo gear.

I see no BS?

 onecock then

hows that?

maybe its from my days of reading british magazines, but reshell = keep same number plate and identity and rebody a car. as todays cars are of monocoque construction, you cant do that. your actually swapping the plates etc to another car. which you cannot do.

So in other words you know exactly what he's talking about, but you feel obliged to make a fuss about it anyway, and clutter his thread?

noooo thats not what I mean.

Me = get NZ registered road legal 4wd lancer for cheap. Import non-compliable evo of same shape lancer. Then swap the bits into the NZ registered one and have it certified as a modified lancer.

Then use the unregistered evo shell as a dog kennel or something.

Can he ban himself (being a mod) or would the TS world implode into itself somehow?

We went thru a similar issue with a BA falcon,

we had a damaged one and a brand new bare shell, and wanted to swap the bits and pieces over and were told no.

We could fit the panels to the damaged shell though.

Ok, so what if we replaced every signel panel in the whole car with the one from the other shell?
Depends on how you word it.

You are not allowed to remove the chassis number and weld it into another car,
But you can remove the entire car from the chassis number and weld a new shell onto the chassis number.......

Dumb rules but it is how it's worded.

In your case you wont have a problem as said before,

and you'll be fine.

When your getting your cert they can note the dash as being replaced so when the km's change at wof time your cert explains why :)
