external wastegates

Postby deaf_rattle » Mon May 14, 2007 8:40 am

I am looking at buying an external wastegate and just working out what my options are.

Looked at blitz, tial and turbonetics ones so far.

There seem to be alot of "style" wastegates on trade me. Are these any good?

Also size, i was thinking about going to a 44mm or there abouts, is there some sort of calculation for how large you need to go?

Also does anyone have any cheap suppliers that i might be able to save a few bucks at?

cheers

Yea I'd be interested to know as well if there is some sort of calculation you can do to measure the wastegate/spring size you need to get for you application?

1JZ + GT35/40 = 350/400rwkw?

Matt sorry for the steal but in my defense it is still 'On Topic'. :P

45-50mm would be the area i'd look at, if you stick to a name brand you cant go wrong.

i have 2 no name brand ones on my aw11
just made new seats for eth valves and secured them properly
the original seats did not provide enought pre thenion to stop leacking

now teh hold a perfect 1 bar and ive no problems at all
ive noticed that teh seats are a issue on them and have made new seats for a some people with leacky gates...new seat...no problem

in saying that i would find it hard to justifie 1 grand worth of ewastegates form my car instead of the 400 bucks worth currently on there...but if i have unlimited money...id spend teh grand

also the size of your wastegate is drectly related to teh a/r of teh ex housing

strx7 is correct
if you want no hassle a good brand like tial or turbosmart/progate is teh option id go
there my fav brands over teh rest

some euros come factory with decent ext wastegates too. i have a 38mm audi one lying in the garage, maybe a bit small tho. they are cheaper than tial/turbonetic etc but still good quality. maybe a pair of quattro gates

...and there's always the option of the internal wastegate.
The majority of our buick 3.8L v6 turbo street monsters retained their integral wastegates. These heavyweights blasted off 10sec ETs... didn't run 'baby' boost tho, obviously.

Some fast powerful 7mgtes run upgraded ct26, still int gated.

Even 1st gen 300zx have hit 450+hp atw with upgraded chra still attached to their stock T3 0.63 exhaust housing and int. wg.

I'd go the extra mile to get an int wg to 'work' vs the added weight, expense and plumbing of a big ol' clumsy ext wg... preference, thats all

Just to come back to this one, I have an opportunity to get a genuine Tial 46mm External Wastegate for a rather decent price. Would this be suitable for what I am after? (Sorry I know nothing about wastegates)

Can the springs on the Tials be modified or replaced should I require larger at some stage?

stiffer springs are availible.

Ive had two of the copy type ones, and the quality compared to a tial seems pretty good.

40-50mm gate should flow enough to hold your boost id imagine

Yes, screamer pipe is illegal as it vents externally.

Doesn't seem to stop everybody with an evo doing it tho.

Just futher to the screamer pipe, my ae101 had one (was plumb back, but for various reasons at the time it was cut, and the exhaust sealed, making a screamer pipe).

And I got a cert with it.

So, yes its illegal unless it is muffled and exits past the rear passengers etc, but there are holes which things fall through, explaining maybe why there are so many evos etc with them.

The guy that certed me was a v8 man, and knew almost nothing of turbos, hence why he didn't notice I think.
