K50 rear oil seal

Postby jeremiahnz » Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:08 pm

I am loosing a lot of oil out the back of my K50. It seems likely that the rear oil seal is worn or split. I have a couple of K40's in the garage so I was going to get the oil seal off one of them but it doesn't seem to want to flick out with a screwdriver.

Is there some trick to getting these out? Can it be done without remove the whole rear housing and popping it out from inside?

Cheers

Cant help as far as getting it out but for a matter of a few bucks (probably under $15) I would buy a new one, rather than try your luck with a 2nd hand one which you will probably damage taking out anyway.

The rear seal costs all of $6.00+gst,you will only damage the seals trying to get them out as they are a tight fit.

Not worried about saving money, I was just checking out the K40's to see if the seal would just pop out. When it wouldn't I wanted to check that this is actually the correct way to get a seal out and put a new one in.

Just get a bit more brutal with the screwdriver, but make sure the box is leaning foward or empty 1st or you will be left with quite a mess.

"Remove the rear steel sleeve/sheild by tapping from the gearbox side towards the back then once that`s off use a prybar or large flatheaded screwdriver to get in behind the seal and pry it out.You dont need to take the tailhousing off to replace the rear seal.
You own a toyota so try a toyota dealer for the part if they dont have it Toyota New Zealand will or you can try a place that sells seals you`ll need the seal outside diameter inside diameter and seal width if you go get one from a place that sells seals"

Cheers, that's useful.

Does anybody have the inner and outer diameter measurements for these seals handy? I just called repco to order one and they say they need measurements to get the correct seal.

I aren't able to measure mine until Friday night at the earliest which means I probably won't be able to get a seal ordered in until next week. I was hoping to replace it this weekend.

And does anybody know if there is actually any variance between the starlet K50 and KE30 K40 seals?

Hmmm, I'll try this from a slightly different angle;

The gearbox is from a starlet and in a KE30. The guy at repco looked up seals for a starlet K50 and said they had listings for one under a 2k and one under a 4k. I am unsure which engine the starlet from which the gearbox was donated had.

Can someone confirm if the starlets with a 2K engines actually came out with K50's? If not then I can just order the seal for the 4K K50 listing.

Cheers

Cheers.

I got them to order me a rear seal for a KE70 K50 because they didn't have starlet K50 part numbers on the system or something.

Just hoping it is right so I can get some oil to stay in the box.
