r154 gearbox rear seal unexplained leaking

Postby gmacrae » Mon Jun 18, 2007 9:38 pm

Hey people. I've just finished my r154 install on my jza80. Everything went real smooth and the gearbox is mint but after a day or 2 of cruising round i noticed the gearbox was leaking out the *new* rear seal quite badly. I figure i must've damaged the seal when putting the driveshaft in, so i ordered a new seal from Warwick, pull the seal out and check it, but it seems perfect :?

It was leaking around the actual yoke and not from the outside of the seal.
It seems to have a nice snug fit on the yoke and there is very minimal yoke movement when its in the gearbox (up/down). The seal used was from toyota, its directional and like i said, it seems fine, no nicks or anything.

Any ideas/input appreciated, cheers

Gene

i've been told that if the driveshaft is out of balance it can cause the output seal to leak, but i don't know if this this assumption is correct or not

If the driveshaft is out of balance i sure havent been able to feel it in the car, been to 150+ and it seems smooth as silk.

The driveshaft has a brand new uni/yoke on the front, is in phase with the rear uni. Length is fine, and the oil is redline 75w90ns with a bitron gear oil additive - definitely shouldnt cause any problems.

Will be interesting to see what seal shows up from Warwick, my mate that did the gearbox work got the first one from rotorua toyota - i understand they can chop and change seal manufacturers occasionally?

Anyone else got any ideas?

was the seal greased before you fitted the drive shaft??
if the shaft went in dry, you may 'burned' the seal.

Yep there was enough oil/grease around there to lube the seal up.

One thing i just spotted, there's a kink in the spring around the inner seal... hopefully this was causing the leak, though its kinda hard to see how :?

Anyone had a 1-2mm kink in the spring cause a seal to do this before?

Im not familiar with these boxes, but another thing to check would be the breather if it has one, just make sure its not damaged or blocked in any way.

if you still have probs once the seal has been replaced then maybe there is movement in the output shaft?

couple of things to check anyway.

Cheers, the breather's been checked by my mate who rebuilt the box, and there is no play in the output at all - its a REAL tight gearbox. The seal gets here tomorrow so we'll soon see i guess

had a engine rear main seal poorly installed that wrecked a new clutch.

Turns out, the seal was the wrong direction, FORCING oil out the back. Thank you rotorua toyota

And thanks to Warwick for sending me the right one :D

Wrong seal. It was in the right way, but it was designed for a shaft/yoke that spins the other way, like the front of a gearbox or something :?

Some seals are directional, they have kinda like vanes in the sealing surface to keep the oil in the right place.

And for the amount of time a car spends in reverse.... doesn't matter.
