Q's on Wheel Adaptors / Hub Conversion

Postby DeeCee » Mon Jun 25, 2007 1:01 pm

Okey Dokey,

Car: 1990 GT4A widebody

I've been looking for some months at mags and the ones that i particularly want do not come in a 5x100 stud pattern for the celica.

Basically, I want 18's as 17's are a bit small, 19's are a bit large and 18's will fill the guards nicely.
I really only want to buy mags once for this car and will happily spend the money on mags i want, not something smaller or in the wrong style.

I currently have the smaller style brake setup on the celica and will be looking at upgrading to willwoods nearer the end of the year (something around the st205 size or thereabouts)

I will be doing certification for changes to the interior, so no big deal adding wheel adaptors to the list.

I'm not expecting to go off road and i don't drive excessively hard.. the car is just something fun to drive around and has a bit more power for some more get up and go.

After doing some info gathering in the search and LVVTA here is the information i have and some questions for everyone so that i can make the best decision as to which direction i should go

1. Wheel Adaptors.

I can get wheel adaptors and go from 5x100 to 5x114.3. I have the widebody guards and there is a far amount of space in there to go wider (wheels i'm looking at are 18x8). I was looking at rebuilding some wider front guards in fibreglass anyway as part of my custom bodykit development so rolling the guards at the front is a moot point.

Looking at these adaptors from Al's shop or maybe from that guy on TM that does custom ones.

and this info here:

2.5 (1) A wheel spacer fitted to a low volume vehicle between the wheel and hub assembly, other than that fitted as original equipment by a high volume vehicle manufacturer, must:

(a) have a maximum spacing of each wheel away from the hub surface of 20mm; and

(b) be set-screwed or attached by another secure method to either the wheel or hub face; and

(c) be manufactured from a solid block of suitable material; and

(d) have two machined or die-cast surfaces that are parallel, and contain minimal indentations or irregularities; and

(e) be fitted as to ensure the wheel locates snugly over the hub spigot so that the hub carries the weight of the wheel assembly instead of the wheel studs, or where there is a mis-match between the hub spigot and the wheel center, a close tolerance center bore locator must be provided; and

(f) maintain, with the spacer fitted, not less than the minimum required amount of wheel stud or bolt engagement specified in 2.4(4).

2. Hub Conversion.

Looking at the toyota parts bin, i notice that the altezza and the mr2 both have the 5x114.3 stud pattern.

Finding the spares wouldn't be an issue (seems to be a bounty of mr2s that are wrecking on Tm at the mo) so its more a matter on the engineering side.

Conversion of hubs would require certification (again not an issue) but would there be a requirement to change the brake setup?

---------------

Any-hoo.. What i need to know is which one is relatively cost effective and safe. By my reckoning, the wheel adaptors are the cheaper option and safe as long as the adaptor abides by the specifications set out above.

The hub conversion does look to be more expensive, but overall a safer option.

I'm not looking at racing or anything and with the amount of audio gear that i have, the car is going to be an even heavier beast that it already is

So do am i missing info on various things or is there more that anyone wants to explain to me?

What option is the most viable, cost effective and safe?

Cheers in advance

Dave
