Rear brake balance off - AE92

hey guys,

My AE92 corolla just failed its WOF, reason: 60:90 brake balance at the back. Now, this happened about 3 WOF's ago, and i spent like $700 getting it fixed at pit stop. They replaced brake bias valve, skimmed the rotors, put new pads in, and completely flushed the fluid.
Its the right rear thats weaker. I checked the lines and caliper for leaks, but didn't find anything. Both pads seem even and in good nic. Rotors too. Any ideas? Need a rebuild kit?

I had same problem, and will be getting mine rebuilt I think.

for the purpose of wof tho, take the pads out and give them a sand, rotors too if you're keen. does the trick, but doesn't solve the problem really :cry:

what kind of grit sand paper? only on the weaker side?
also, when you doing the rebuild? would be great if you could tell me how it goes... but the results really depend on you having a brake balance checking machine around doesn't it?

Go get some emery(sp) cloth its about 120G i think. Comes in a few diffrent corses i think.

Emery is probly just a bit easier to play with, has a cloth backing, its not expensive. And yeah sandpaper will probly work fine.

Have you bled the right brake?sometimes it only requires rebleeding .

umm don't think so... can't be sure though cos fluid came out straight away but might have been a bubble there too...

Ok, Have you pulled your calipers away from the pads and checked your slides? If you have a lot of play or a slide that is seizing up you will get poor braking from that caliper. Often slides are a bit corroded inside or out of grease. You can sometimes free up the slides and regrease them to regain function.

I don't recall the grit of sand paper I used, was a bit more coarse for the pads as mine were a bit glazed. But i'd say 300 or so should do it.

emery cloth is good tho, quicker with it. Can't get it in rectangles from places like spraystore and mitre10 etc, in painting section

All of the corolla calipers are single piston sliding calipers so you have a piston on one side (inboard pad) and supports that press on the other pad (outboard pad). For this to work (or float) the whole caliper is mounted on slides. These only move a small amount when braking and so are prone to rusting and seizing. I tried to find a good diagram but nothing was really clear. Check out the following link though.

Best to add some grease under the little rubber boots if they're sticky/rusty/loose and move them around to ditribute it.

http://www.geocities.com/ae82supercharg ... c_Orig.JPG This shows a AE82 rear brake and you can see the little rubber boot at the top of the caliper - this is the seal for the top caliper slide. The bottom slide has 2 rubber boots.

hey, oooh so those are the slides.
yeah, i pulled the caliper off them and seemed fine - no rust etc. i also tried to move it about a bit when it was bolted down, and there was a little movement - i suppose this is normal?
i'll take them in on thursday after bleeding that brake and sanding the pads a little and see what happens...

just get the calliper rebuild/reseal kit from toyota and be done with it. Its a straightforward job if you have some long nose circlip pliers if the handbrake operates the pads and not a drum. Oh, and dont use too much grease putting it all back together - i clogged the calliper on my very first attempt :x

got my warrant today...
just did a rebleed and sanded the pads...

might look at doing the rebuild. what tools are needed?
is it just replacing the seals inside the caliper?

one question, if theres a problem with the caliper itself, will replacing the seals actually fix this tho?
