Tips for filling gearbox

Postby Boosted_162 » Fri Jun 29, 2007 5:09 pm

Had a quick search, couldnt find anything too helpful...

Now im filling up my gearbox (E150F, ST185). The oil i have is in a 4L bottle, and i cant really tip it in the filler hole! Any tips for filling this? Can it be filled from the top? If it can, how much oil does it hold?

Thanks for your help.

You will find that it holds 5.1L of oil (that is if you drained tranfer case).
I filled it thorugh breather on the gear shift mechanism (17mm bolt?) and a funnel.
best way is to leave side oil drain plug open and fill it up untill oil start coming out of it. (note there are 3 drain plugs - 2 bottom and 3rd - is not really drain plug but it is used as oil level plug which is on side of the gearbox below starter).
Note: to drain the gearbox completely both of the bottom drain plugs must be undone, while you can fill it up through 1 hole to fill both gearbox and transfer case.

Go to payless plastics. For a couple of bucks they sell these things that are a hand pump with 2 bendy hoses coming out of them.

Drain gbox then put bung back in.

Open filler hole.

Put one bendy hose in 4L oil and one in filler hole.

Pump the hand pump till oil comes out of filler hole.

Tighten bottom bung and filler hole bolts.

Bob's yer unkle

Or go to supercheap and get one of those big syringe type fillers. cleanest and quickest way to do it. (other than air powered filler)

Although I'll stick to my method, I noticed last night that the warehouse had a hand pump that states it can do car oils etc for $10.

Well i bought another 1L of oil, and it came with the top with the tube in it, so i did the majority with that (could only get 700ish ml out), then used syringe for the rest. Got about 4.9L in, so cant of been completely empty.

Cheers guys :)
