The knocking noise is coming from the engine, as the revs go up it speeds up and get noiser, when the revs come down the noise slows down and dun get as loud.

yes the noise is constant, and it keeps pace with the engine speed, i took my car to the mechanic and he's very sure it's not the noise of the big end bearings as he said it would be much louder if i ran a bearing

any mech should be able to pick run bearings easily.

there is other possbilitys, such as belt noise, belt idler/alternator bearings, though they tend to be more of a rattle.
hard to diagnose a noise when you cant hear it...

did the mechanic offer any suggestions as to what it is?

by your description it sounds like bearings.... and i still think bearings...

go ask another mechanic then. As Rev says, any mechanic should be able to at least take a educated guess, no need for a 'blacktop specalist'.
Dont reallylike to say, but he may have thought it ws a bearing and couldt be arsed with it so sent you packing. Hopefully not the case, but it can happen...

Try some of that belt spray stuff that makes them run quiter. It makes diagnosing where the sound is coming from way easier.
If you have no idea where the noise is coming from apart from the engine, i think any mechanic will start at the top or bottom of the engine & work to the other end to find whats wrong which might cost u big bucks, when u could know where the noise is & go here's where the noise is, find what it is & tell me what it takes/costs to fix it.
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983
