Detonation on JEs..

Postby Boosted_162 » Fri Jul 06, 2007 10:15 pm

Hey guys.

Just browsing trademe (as you do ). Now theres a set of JEs on there, pretty cheap as well. Now theres some marking from detonation on one of the pistons, would this affect it at all? Ive decided to build up myself a new motor.

Cheers. Heres a pic to help explain. Bad photo, but you can see the marks on there.

Well....yeah :P. The motor i just put in only standard tho, and im not certain of its history. I know the last owner, but before that is a mystery. I have to pull mine out in the future anyway, so i thought id build a new one thats gunna last, forged internals and new bearings etc. The motor in there now was a spare one anyway, so ill run it on that until i build up another new motor

Probably the reason I cant see the detonation is because the pic is of the pistons when they are new.. ie never fired, no detonation.

This is the pic of the piston with detonation.

Its hard to make out, but it doesnt look terminal for that piston.

Good spotting there, i didnt look too hard at the picture i posted, it looked like there was a mark on no. 1, but its a crap photo anyway. Looking at it now tho i realise the pistons were way too clean!!

So you reckon there'd be no problems with it? Or is it one of those things to steer clear of?

If you can go & look at them in person, or get someone you trust to go & look at them. I'd also insist on getting them crack tested or something along those lines before buying also if you can just to make sure. But then it's not really stupid money to buy a new set anyway & it's cheap insurance. Have a good look around the gudgeon bosses as that is the area where JE's generally will fail in turbo applications.

Yeah, the last thing im wanting is one to fail and exit the block in a spectacular fashion! And being at the other end of the country doesn't really help! Might see if i can get ahold of Kenny's ones, otherwise i might just save for new ones :)

Cheers for your help.
