help! SW20 window regulator problem

Postby gordon77 » Mon Jul 16, 2007 5:51 pm

hello ppl, my (god bless it) SW20 decided that it didnt want the window to work go up or down because of miss-alignment (drove on gravel with potholes for about 40km last weekend) anyways so i decided to pull off the door skin and have a look - i saw that there are 4 bolts/nuts holding the motor assembly on the inside of the door. 1 bolt has been pulled out completly, another has ripped a BIG hole where it used to be (probably twisted out) and another is about to do the same  i would like to know if anyone else has had this happen and how to fix. atm the only option i can see is get another inside door panel and cut/weld a new piece in. :? and then get my auto sparky to re-align everything again. im hoping there is an easier way of doing it 8O

common problem. happened twice with my old one.

you can weld new bits of metal in and redrill, or do what i did and buy a new door (twice) but do what i did the second time, and reinforce the wholes. is yours a first gen sw20 (89-92)??

your window regulator has SW20'ed itself.
common on those
you need a new one
and no, you dont need to cut/weld anything! unless its really shagged itself and pulled the mounts out....

yeah i dont think ill know that till i get the glass out and have a look at it properly.

Pies - what did you do to reinforce them? weld more panel around where the holes are?

also another question - ill get a panel beater to do it but how many hours should we be looking at to cut/weld this and add reinforcing?

The regs rip the tabs off where they are attached to the inner door skin. You either have a reg with two or more ripped off tags taht you may be able to weld back on else they are soooo munted you might have to weld soem new material on. The other prob is that they rip the inner door skin to shreds. Penny washer the 10mm bolts and it will be fine.
