Custom piston rings

Postby Dell'Orto » Thu Jul 26, 2007 7:10 pm

Who in NZ makes these? Preferably in the North Island. I've found my motor has Arias forged pistons in it, but they dont take a standard size ring

Yeah, it would seem the rods are shotpeened and what look to be ARP rodbolts are in the mix too.
Only problem being is that its a bit smokey, and I'm unsure whether the bores are glazed or the rings have detensioned. Should have compression tested it before ripping it apart :?

Considering the exchange rate. Why not just buy them direct and courier from the US?

How do the rings for the Arias pistons differ?
Are they just thinner?

This was the case with TRD rings. They were thinner and more brittle- and more expensive. Being brittle meant that they were quite susceptable to breaking and when they did they had a tendency to 'feather' the groove in the piston effectively ruining it.

So the smart guys would regroove the piston to take the standard rings. They were fatter and less brittle, and a lot cheaper than the TRD rings.
In serious motorsport use they wore more quickly which meant perhaps a refresh halfway through a full rally season.

Can't find anything on their site that mentions the particular size ring. Dropped the block off at the engine builders and his reaction was priceless
"How the hell did it get this bad? Thats incredibly glazed!"

Yeah they are thinner, which isnt a problem, as you said I can just get the pistons regrooved. Main problem being there are no decent rings available for a 4K, particularly in .020 oversize. ACL wont sell me a standard set as they said they wont handle what I'm planning on using this motor for.
