Anyone experienced with rear disc brakes?

Postby skoty » Tue Aug 21, 2007 10:03 pm

Always have had problems with rear disc brakes that incorporate both the foot brake and hand brake in the caliper. My corolla gt gave me problems in the brakes department but those days are gone and now its a different car but same principle I guess. Replaced the rear pads in my car, one side sweet as. Went to do the other side and was unable to wind the piston back in even though it still turned. Inspected the piston and noticed the seal wasn't sitting on properly then on further inspection I noticed the piston was scored and covered in crap so I assume thats the problem.

Now same applies with all cars I guess but whats the deal with stock calipers, can you get them reconditioned at a reasonable price or do ya just slap on a second handy which will probably give problems down the line?

Thanks,

skoty.

its nothing uncommen, you may have to compress the piston with pollys and then turn the piston again with a block, the piston will normally "catch" and then will begin to sink.

sometimes you have to repeat the process until it you get it right back.

But wont it be a problem that the piston is scored in dirty? Plus I cant get the seal back in

If it wasnt leaking to start with then it should be ok. So have you pulled the piston out of the caliper?is the scoring/dirt in the line of travel or on the outside of the boot? was the outer boot ok?

trying to get the picture by text is a MOFO lol

Yeah I'd repair/replace if the piston is scored/damaged.

You can get caliper rebuild kits which have new seals etc in them, they arent very expensive.

Basically the seal around the piston had partially come off somehow and I couldn't refit it. So I removed it to inspect the whole piston and thats when I noticed it was damaged. No the piston is still in the caliper.

Anymore info? Is it like a DIY kit or something? I think the piston is more just dirty, not so much scored so I guess you could clean it up. Worth while rebuilding both rear calipers I suppose?

Just buy a re-built kit, it's easy as to do, I can give you a hand if you need it.

If it's for your silvia, just pop into nissan with your model code and stuff.

You can buy just the pison seal or the dust boot too, you might as well get both, and if your piston is damaged maybe a new one too.

Got things on track now, removed both calipers and bringing them into work tomorrow. Going to rebuild both with new kits (seals and boots) Get stuff like that cheap through my work, may as well do things properly. Got a spare car to get me around in the mean time so its all gravy. Hopefully rebuilt calipers will do the trick :)
