turbo oil pressure - video added

Postby Caveman » Fri Aug 24, 2007 2:43 pm

Hi

Does anyone here know the ideal flowrate of oil into a turbo? Or the pressure of oil past the restrictor? Turbo in question is a mistubishi td04.

Planning on running between 10000rpm and 100000rpm so obviously flowrates change across this band, just looking for a guide from any people in the trade.

Cheers

What engine/car you puttin it on?

I'm pretty sure those turbo's dont need a restrictor.

I have a tdo4 from a subby and puttin it on my Starlet, subby engines run about 100psi and the Starlet runs about 60psi, so no need for me to use a restrictor ...

yeh im pretty sure TD series turbos dont need restrictors, just run engine oil pressure. garret turbos do. but no pressure figures sorry.

Yea, thats right, if I was gonna run a Garret I would need a restricter too.

Running on a turbo jet, we are having problems starting it and I think we are flooding it with oil because its pooling in the turbine housing. Right now we are using a fuel pump to flow the oil (yes this does work) but now I think we should use a ps pump and a variable motor to change pressure.

You checked the basics? ie: turbo oil seals, and the drain pipe is free flowing?
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

yea buddy all that stuff is working well. The seals are $&#$% because it smoked however I know it works because we pulled it from a working car. A total guestamate i'd say were flowing around 3-4L/min through the core using the fuel pump.

At first I thought more oil would be better, but after reading up a bit I found this

I made some modifications to to the pipe and remounted it. It stayed on during the second test. The engine spooled up nicely, but then topped out at what seemed like a fairly low speed, and would not self-sustain without the blower. I don't have a tachometer yet, so I am only guessing at the speed. I lowered the oil pressure to the turbo and found that the engine sped up. I then lowered the pressure as far as my crude regulator would allow, and was rewarded with a further increase in speed, but it still would not self-sustain. Obviously the oil pressure was still to high and creating too much drag on the turbo. The oil pump will supply a little over 40 psi. My regulator will cut that down to just below 20 psi, but that is still way to much. Obviously it still needs some work. As a temporary measure, I simply kinked the oil line to the turbo further reducing the flow. This resulted in a dramatic increase in speed, and sure enough it self-sustained. I attempted to explore the performance of the engine, but it was proving too difficult to maintain a constant oil pressure. I will rework the regulator tomorrow and try again.

I think part of the reason the td04 dont use a restrictor is they have them on the bango bolt. Ive lost this so am not sure on the size etc.

I'll get back to you when I get my basic gas turbine rating :P

i know the oil feed banjo bolt on a TD05 has very small holes which act as a restrictor

Could it be there is a blockage of some-sort in the return? thus pooling oil in the turbo?

we have about 1/4 inch going into the turbo with no restrictor. Going to fit restrictor and will post back on performance. Cheers 8)

Hey sorry forgot to post up results

It turns out the ideal amount of oil flowing through the turbo is about 2 drops per second, no sh!t. The turbo would bog down and the engine would stall with any more oil.

We took some footage of it running, with a night run with lots of flames flying out the back  Runs really nicely.

We restricted the oil with vice grips on the oil line  Crude but worked.

We are planning another unit with full stainless contruction and a truck turbo 8)
