to goo or not to goo?

Postby flygt4 » Thu Aug 30, 2007 6:45 pm

i used to use gasket goo on everything even if i had the correct gasket, as sort of a just to be safe thing. I never had any major issues before. someone mentioned to me that if you have the correct gasket you shouldnt have any issues and not require goo.

this time around i have reassembled everything with the correct gaskets minus goo, mainly only because i couldnt find my caulking gun.

what do most people do? especially when assembling things like manifolds, turbos etc?

i'd be interested to hear other peoples opinions on this too.

i tend to use shellac type stuff on gaskets where coolant is involved, particularly waterpump gaskets. for me it depends on the condition of the two mating surfaces, and the type of gasket being used.

my boss is a big fan of hylomar when it comes to headgaskets, i dont like it myself but use it because well, hes the boss. i feel like if you have two machined surfaces and a brand new gasket, there shouldnt be any problems.

When it comes to head gaskets i dont use anything, just a surface clean enough to eat off. on rubber gaskets i dont use anything unless im reusing it or its a subaru tappet cover gasket. and gasket cement/ shellac on water pumps, water gaskets. its great never had a leak when using it. have used hylomar on a gasketless cam girdle plate where an anerobic sealant failed. alot of the time i use nothing. and on turbos, manifolds etc if ive got a new gasket i dont use anything on them, no need. rubber greese on o-rings and cam seals etc

yea i tend to use sealant, i used hi temp rtv on turbos an exhaust manifold, and this gasket seal from marine shop, its wicked seals things like a mofo an it doesnt ever go hard and its easy to get off, but at $50 for like 500ml you would expect that

use proper gaskets where i can, as well as between head and turbo mani, but use no gaskets between turbo and manifold, turbo to dp, and not between wg and manifold, and wg and dp.

just make sure they all flat.

i use sylicon stuff for most things coz its too much o a hassle to get the reail gaskits (nearist repco ect = 30min) except for heaid and exaust gaskits but thats just for tinkering around in the shed at my work evperiance place they tend to use straght gaskets unless they are reusing or dont have the gaskit on hand/not wort getting

I use red rtv hi temp stuff on used steel exh gaskets, new intake gaskets etc. Black Toyota sealer or the grey nissan stuff is the best IMO for non gasket joints (steel to steel) like ze sumps and nissan front timing covers etc.

VBand joins seal good without any sealant. Thats interesting about not using gaskets between turbo flanges etc etc. I saw a well made manifold the other that didnt have sealant between the flange.

I use a steel t3 divided one on my turbo to mani.

some people use a thin layer of greese between turbo and manifolds, when cooked with heat it goes hard and seals.

And yes the black toyota RTV is the one, i forgot about it because i havnt used it in ages. and its rather expensive
