Can i chop this without affecting the cars "structure&q

Postby method » Fri Aug 31, 2007 11:12 pm

Im trying to fit a intercooler, its a little to big so need to chop a little out of the front of my car and for the I/C piping.

Its all sheet metal, and not the chassis obviously.
And theres a big hole where the radiator is so it cant be supporting the body structurally much, just holding the valance bumper and radiator in place.

Just that i know things like steel parcel trays cant be cut due to it being used as a cross brace in some cars.

Im going to make up custom lower mounts for the radiator because they will be chopped out, just by using strips of aluminum.

Just checking before i whip out the cutting tools.

just out of interest what size is the i/c?

when i measured up my 35 and figured i could get a 400x350x76 i/c in between the grill and radiator without cutting anything, except holes for the i/c pipes.

i cant see how cutting that away would effect anything though, ive seen those front panels chopped up pretty bad to fit intercoolers in and still pass certs

Yeah i measured up a 400X300 to fit too, but couldnt find one.

So i got a 450X300 which just doesn't fit as you can see. :x

is the 450x300 i/c you got the core size though?
i found thats what most people measure and don't allow for the tanks!

i was looking at one of these ones off TM - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =114950795
460x300x76 overall size with a 280x300x76 core size. i would hope it would fit in with a small square cut out where you've mentioned to allow a 90º bend to fit in...

probably no use to you seeing as you've already bought one but the ones on TM are pretty cheap...

Yeah, im talking core sizes, im sure i measured a 400X300X76 cored cooler to fit including end tanks.

Yeah that looks like a nice intercooler.

I only paid $150 new for my 450X300X76.. thats why i took it. Pretty damn cheap and it seems all good.

Those bits are generally light weight support parts made out of a softer steel. You should be able to cut them but verify with your cert guy.

The chassis rails and engine bay sides (including where the fenders bolt on) are part of the crash structure and shouldn't be touched. Same goes for the box section under the radiator.

Just going from your pics I would still give you a WOF if you cut those bits out.
