hks blow off valve?? found problem

Postby B-style » Sun Sep 02, 2007 9:33 pm

I recently got a genuine hks ssqv bov to replace my standard skyline one.
but as I went to fit it I noticed that the valve doesn't have any spring tention to keep it closed. You can press the valve open with a finger and it'll stay open. thought this was very strange, but being a pull type i thought I'd try it anyway. and it seems to work fine!

any help would be appreciated

Us and a few others have had trouble with the HKS ssqv type at high boost levels, they just would not keep the pressure in.

Binned them in the end and went for most basic designs.

They seem ok for road car and low boost levels though, ( less than 16 psi or so)

Genuine HKS or a cheap copy?

Never heard of genuine ones giving a problem even at 30PSI. Copies though always seem to give problems, even at low boost levels

I am pretty sure that they were geniune as I remember them going on about how much it cost and how it diddn't work.

Took quite a while to suss out why the boost would not go above 17 psi.

I had a similar issue with my own one which was a turbo smart one.Pulled it apart and fitted about 8mm of washers under the spring for more tension and it was amazing how much faster it came on boost.

maybe the HKS one's we tried were just dud ones?

Ive heard they do leak over say 20psi, but ive had one brand new out the box and even the hks sqv which is the one before.Ive taken them all apart i just dnt see how they would leak as pressure forces them closed due to their design rather than the other ones that get pushed open by pressure.

Yes there should be a spring inside if you press the little green knob it should spring back. Take it apart and have a look to see if there is a spring inside.

I had a HKS bov in an old car (wow, that was 6 years ago now) and it crapped itself one day...so i went to the local perf shop who stocked hks parts and they said that they are common for not working...the spring inside loses all tension.
even hks themselves knows that this happens, cause they have a hole parts list of just springs for the bov's.

so yea, just go to hks or hks surplier and get a new spring.

i went into red line performance (hks agent) today and apparently they don't do them at all.

they suggested that i'd get one made up.

chuck the hks away if your having problems! if you have to replace the spring now you will probly have to do it again some time in the future. what a hassle! get a GFB, everyone i know thats got one says they work mint, never leak pressure even at 20psi, i have one and there are absolutely no problems

I'm sure mine is an HKS copy, and I've never had any problems. Run 12psi for prob 4 of the 5 years i've had it.
