Coilovers question

Postby Warren » Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:16 pm

Hey,

Just wanting to know which way you turn the lock disc things to lower the car.
My rear ones are already at the bottom of the thread and my front ones are about 15mm from the bottom of the thread. Does this mean that my car is as low as it can basically go? If so, thats fine cos it rides quite nice and doesn't scrape very often at all.
I can't put my front ones to the bottom of the thread otherwise the springs arent captive.

Thats what I thought. If I were to screw dics up that would compress the springs therefore lower the car right?

I have those coilovers.
B are the discs I'm talking about. Do those need to go up or down to lower the car? I would have thought up to compress the spring therefore lower the car.

The link just goes to the homepage. But on most coilovers, the two rings under the springs will lower the car when you lower them

if you loosen "B" (turn left) you will lower the car same as increasing the pre load raises the car. remember when loosening "B" you are loosening your pre-load on the spring effectivly making the spring softer as there is no pre load only the spring rate eg 6kg/mm instead of maybe 6.5 or 7kg/mm with more pre load wound in im not sure how much preload can be dailed in tho.. hope that makes sense

Hahaha, yeah thats was a bit confusing. But thanks for your response mule, appreciate it.

Thanks Revhead, thats all I need to know.
So my car is basically as low as it can go, which isn't very low I might add, not that I'm complaining. At least I can go over speed bumps or up driveways without having to ask people to get out of the car or scrape all the time etc hahahaha.

not confusing.... just using the wrong terms and adding in some incorrect statements.

"preload" as he put it is just the spring taking up load. its got nothing to do with increasing or decreasing the spring rate.

winding the spring up does not increae the rate. nor does winding it down decrease it. unless your talking about the first little bit where its just taking up the weight of the car. which it should always do. and that is a very very small amout of movement.

Preload, does what it says, it preloads the springs. So that the load applied to them must exceed the preload before they move. It does not change the rate of the springs from that point on though.

Provided they are preloaded below the corner weight of the car then it has no effect on the suspension, other than static ride height.
