smallport vs bigport

Postby 3T-Rona » Sun Sep 16, 2007 8:51 pm

right i tried a search, didnt come up with a lot.... maybe i didnt look hard enough, dnt flame me :)
Obviously the n/a smallport 4age makes more power than a bigport,
with flow and vilosity and what not and,
the obvious '100kw redtop' versus '88kw bluetop' factor.
What i would like to know is which is better between a forced induction 4age small port and forced induction 4age bigport.........
Which is better bang for buck for someone wanting to slap together a s/c skid car on a budget (i know, i know bad word)
Which would be the best combo for a bit of easy power i.e redtop head, blue top cams, 7 rib block, 8.9:1 gze pistons, redtop rods...... sort a thang
any ideas...... maybe big port head with tvis on a pressure switch so it opened under boost ????.......

cheapest starting with nothing. slap a sc12 on stock bigport.

other options would depend on what you have
smallports are popular so are harder to find than bigports.

as for which head is better for FI.
both are good, just the small port is better up till a certain number, then bigport. but i beleive youd be looking at some serious boost and hp for the bigport to be benifical
thats not to say that the big port is enough of a disadvantsge wo worry about

is the comp. anything to worry bout on a stock bigport i.e i have a bigport head on a silvertop bottom end (rods, pistons, crank, block)
and i have an sc14, should i just slap it on and boost it up, am i gnna need some kind of fuel adjustment (safc, turbo link)
or should i just keep collecting up parts for an alright motor and then sell my current motor when ive got enuf parts........

yeah all 4ages bar the 20vs can handle sub 10psi (maybe more) in stock internals. some have even done it on the 20vs, but im not so keen.

for FI you do need an ECU that can handle it.
my AW11 had a stock ae92 bigport and AW11 4agze manifolds and ECU etc. ran very well.

what you do depends on your aim and budget.
i see your main issue as ECU, as aftermarket can cost a bit.
if you can get your hands on a 4AGZE one then you are well on the way to a good budget build. but if you can. get an aftermarket one. the extra potential is worht it. theres always megasquirt....

as stated youll need the whole inlet setup and loom and ecu, to make it easier or you could go aftermarket ecu

so if i wanted to slap on a s/c with the intake order rearranged i.e n/a intake, throttle body after s/c. would i need a aftermarket ecu or will a gze comp do.

youll also need the gze alternator etc as the s/c mounts right where your alternator is.
