AE85 automatic driveshaft question

Postby allsecretlove777 » Mon Sep 17, 2007 3:31 pm

Hi,
Ive got a 1985 automatic ae85 which is going to be converted to bluetop 4age with a t50 or possibly a t40 for the time being. I will change to ae86 diff later on but start off running the open diff for now. My question is.. can my ae85 automatic driveshaft be used with a t50 or t40 (22 spline)?? If not, which driveshafts would be suitable??
Thanks for your ideas.

that auto shaft is no good in a manual conversion, i heard its good in a w55 gear box conversion tho but not sure,
you will have to use a proper ae86 shaft for the 22 spline box,
or you could save a bit of cash and get a 20 spline t50 and use a ae85 20 spline shaft,

yea they have the w50, w55 and A series auto sized yoke so no good for your t50. They could be used in a w55 conversion but are shorter and have smaller universal joints than normal w55 cars so not really a good choice

any ae86 shaft will work,

as for whats better then the other, well theres not much in it, two piece will be easier to find because only the gtv ae86 got a one piece shaft, and that model is the bare minimal lightest parts and no options style for racing,

i like one piece, less to go wrong, and less whinny. just use what you can find

there is no specific auto diff its just S and T

ae85 is S series diff very small and weak with drum brakes
ae86 is T series diff little bit bigger and ok for NA power disc brakes
they both bolt up the same and mate up to the same points, same length and stuff like that, daily driving a S series diff with 4age is ok,
