ae86 problems

Postby JamesM » Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:53 am

I have a few problems with my ae86.
Firstly ventilation.. the cabin stinks of fuel. I run a fuel cell that is sealed off from the cabin but the braided lines run through the cabin and into the engine bay. I cant find any leaks in the connections anywhere.. and the tank and pumps etc are all open to the outside anyway.. any ideas on what could be causing this.. the car is fully stripped out with fiberglass doors and im running lexan windows and have no way for fresh air to get into the car so that is one thing I need to setup. Any ideas on the best way to ventilate it? Petrol fumes are heavier than air right? I noticed that the smell is stronger down by the floor.

Second problem is the brakes are shite. And they shouldn’t be. As they are from the r33 skyline. They seem to work ok once I press hard enough but man I need to push hard on the pedal. Brakes are well bled. When im traveling at slow speeds like in traffic I still need to press really hard on brake to get them to work.. luckily I ride my bike lots cause my leg gets pretty tired after driving. It feels like the disks are just slipping through the pads? Could there be something wrong with the booster? Or the pads?

Any help appreciated

not sure on either problem maybe the carbon cannister, maybe grease or something on the discs??
but having fuel lines running through the car is a major safety issue and is not allowed by cert/wof guys etc. the first thing id be doing would me re-routing the lines under the car.

just off the top of my head.

Where is the line that normally goes to the carbon canister going to?
did you upgrade the brake master cylinder when doing the conversion?
did you upgrade the booster?
is the booster one-way vaccuum valve thingie round the right way?

As James said, you are allowed to run fuel lines through the cabin, you are not allowed to have a joining connection in the cabin, other than the two bulk head type connectors, at each end.

James - in regard to the fumes coming in I would be checking my rear entry and front exit points of your fuel line to see how well it is contained, plus looking for any other openings in the floor pan etc, even the smallest of holes will allow the fumes in due to the pressure difference between the inside & outside.

One simple & effective way to get some ventilation in there would be to insert a sliding section in both the passengers and drivers window, this could be made up from left over Lexan if you have it

i see, asked the cert man when i was building my car about having a surge tank etc in th boot (ae85 hatch) and he simply said no fuel at all in the cabin uless its in a sealed box type thing. Id be Re routing them anyways, safety issue IMO.

If your running a fuel cell then wont it have a vented filler cap? Fumes could be coming from there. How well is it sealed off from the rest of the car? If its not completely air tight then your going to get fumes coming in.

there is a vent in the top of the tank that at the moment just vents under the car. i will look at actually venting it to the outside of the car and see if this helps..
and i will look at blocking up all the holes that i can find in the floor pan as there are probalbly a few.

i upgraded the master cylinder booster but actually thingking about it now i dont think i put in a one way valve. thanks.

There has been a few guys with the same fuel smell problem in the car club, you may need to check that the lines are the teflon lined braided hose or just the rubber with a braided outer, the problem seams to be when using pump gas and not with avgas . Your brakes sound like you have the wrong master cylinder bore size to suit the caliper piston size.

yeap, some of those braided fuel lines allows the smell to come through the wall of the lines.

Apparently rubber lined ones as NZae86 said are notorious, and teflon lined ones are ok. I had the same problem but once i changed to teflon lined braided hose, the smell is no longer noticeable.
