4age vs 4agze flywheel weights

Postby barryogen » Wed Sep 19, 2007 2:20 pm

no doubt it has been asked before, but searching found nothing.

I know from reading that they are different sizes, I just wondered how much weight difference there was in a stock vs stock situation?

I have pretty much all the 4age and ze flywheels at home and I am in the process of weighing them, so I will let you know when I do, I think you will find that they dont differ in weight too much between flywheels, its more where the material is positioned on the fly wheel..

I have the numbers at home. But if I remember correctly the weights vary by around 1kg, from the 8inch (200mm) blue top flywheel to the 8.5inch (214mm) smallport and silvertop flywheels. 6-7kg. The blacktop is the lightest 214mm flywheel at 6.5kg (??? will have to check). The 224 GZE flywheels are heavier, but I'm not sure on their weights.
All the 4AGE flywheels I've seen look pretty evenly distributed in their mass.

When weighing them it pays to weight them WITH the clutch cover.
I found out that a bluetop flywheel plus cover has approximateky the same mass as the blacktop flywheel and cover. So unless you need the clutch area, there would be no point in using a blacktop flywheel over a bluetop.

accept all the weight taken out of the blacktop is around the outer edge, where on the bluetop one there is allot of meat there. So blacktop = smaller moment of inertia

I can't dispute this completely since I don't have a bluetop one lying around (it's in the car)...
But the blacktop flywheel naturally has more mass closer to the edge since it's clutch face is larger diameter...
But like I said, I can't compare them side by side anyways.

I wish i had a camera heaps of mass gone from the outside ring where the bluetop has a huge chunk of weight its pretty obvious

ke70wagon20v is right, 20v has slightly larger diameter but the blue top has a full circumference where the dowels and bolt holes are. The black top has all the area between the dowels and bolt holes removed.

How much it affects the moment of inertia, not sure. The radius of gyration may end up in the same place due to the blacktop having a larger diameter clutch. All speculation without testing.

Thanks guys, I think you have pretty much answered my question.

I just wanted to know whether or not there was a major difference in weight between the supercharged and non-supercharged variants of the 4age, and there seems to be an almost conclusive, "not a lot"
