Crazy low profile tyres, how low?

Postby barryogen » Mon Sep 24, 2007 2:11 pm

Hi guys, a workmate of mine has posed the question of how low in profile do they make tyres?

Having a quick browse round NZ tyre shops suggests 35 is about as low as it goes, but some US places have 25s and even 20s... do they do 15s 10s and maybe even 5s?

And other than the feeling of riding on concrete tyres and wank factor, whats the point?

I think we found a 35 profile 20" in the tyre pile in the pile at slip way.
worryingly minuscule sidewall.

How many cars use 355's tho Sergei

Other than show, i wouldnt use any stupidly low profile tyres on NZ roads. Got bent rims?

what are these people doing when they drive? I have 205/40/16s and they hit gutters(albeit slowly) each night when I get home, and not a dent in site... hell, I think I'd cry if I bent them.

Had 215/35/R18s on the AE92, never had an issue.

You'll find they go pretty low in profile when you start getting to the wide rims of supercars due to it being a percentage of the width so you still actually have a decent size sidewall because the tyre is so wide

ever hit one of those potholes that just appears out of nowhere? that will dent a rim easily

215/35/19's on centre line rims - had problem with flat spots / inner rim cracking

just laid on new Dunlop Super Sports.... fricking dear but sticks like s&*t to a blanket

was told that centre line rims being american made alloy are to soft for nz's crap roads..... a 35mm of sidewall isnt helping it

nothing wanky about having big shiny feet with nice new shoes... lower profile = less side roll = more efficient cornering

they have their moments, i found large parts of arizona and utah to be pretty smooth. colorado was pretty lumpy, i think cause of all the trucks wearing chains in the winter.

I cant speak for the Centerline road rims, but their racing rims are designed to bend (not crack). And did incredibly well on my offroad race car. They took hits that damaged my Ultras weighing twice as much.

Actually everything wanky about excessively low profile tyres. The sidewall is there for a reason, its suspension. The tyre acts as a big part of any suspension system. Its obsorbing a majority of small bumps and deforming the tyre to fit the road. If the tyre deforms, you get more grip. If the tyre doesnt deform (IE too low a profile, low air volume, low deformity) the tyre will skitter and you'll have no where near the level of traction.
Ever notice the profile on drag racing tyres? Rally tyres, dirt track, offroad racing, Formula race cars, in fact most if not all racing tyres? The profile isnt there just for looks.

think dads thruxtons have 265/30/18's? can't remember if they're 30 or 35, will check later tonite. didn't like them on the front of the aristo though, tracked too much round his place where the road is patchy, ducks and dives all over the place...

why does everyone insist on having excessivly wide tires on street cars i mean come on 265s and 235 it just a tad overkill.
the top D1 guys only run 235s and grip is paramount in top level drifting... id bet 95% of the cars with 265s couldnt loose traction if they tried...
