101 - Steering feels loose

Postby neo » Sat Sep 29, 2007 11:07 pm

Hey all...

Finally I have Bazdas suspension in the racecar and the alignment has been setup as follows:

Front Camber -2deg, -2deg
Front Castor +2.5 deg , +4deg
Front Toe -0.5mm, -0.5mm

Rear Camber -.75deg, -.75deg
Rear Toe +0.5mm, +0.5mm (was meant to be 0)

Driving around things are all fine (except the steering doesn't auto centre very well), until I take a decent corner hard. After the car has gone around the corner and then back onto the straight, the steering wheel will be like 1/6 out (in the direction just turned from) - for some time. Eventually it will come back to being straight..

Ive checked all the steering joints / rack ends / tie rods, it all seems tight.

Is this just because of the suspension settings I have?

'auto centring' is generally based on the amount of front castor angle.
I noticed on my AE104 yesterday, with say 5 degrees camber on the front, the steering was definitily lighter than with say 3 degrees - numbers are guesimates not exact. I put that down to different amount of contact area

And the answer is....

One of the coilovers must not be machined properly as the assembly that bolts to the hub can rock back and forth on the shock body/ the threaded part.

Yes the locking washers are done up tight.

This shows how bad it is:

Post left hand corner, been on the straight for some time:

Then after the next right hand corner (back straight), and been on the straight for some time:

Not sure how to interpret that?
So it has different amounts on each side?
