GT Radial Tyres

Postby darkwolf » Tue Oct 02, 2007 12:14 am

Ok so I'm running some GT Radial Champiro 40's and have found what appears to be an issue.

Can I just ask if anyone else has these tyres and if they've noticed how warm they get with "spirited" driving.

I mean they handle well enough but I'm just concerned about the temperature of these tyres. It's enough that you don't feel comfortable leaving you're hand on them afterwards.

Now I know that this can be caused by skidding - which thus far I've noticed none of as I haven't been trying to push them that far.

The other thought is that the heat from my brakes may be traveling through the mag into the tyres but I think that might be a bit far fetched especially since I made it up as a possible reason :)

So basically, can anyone confirm their tyres feeling similar or if they have/had these tyres can you shed some light on the situation.

It's not like I've been driving them hard for ages either. It's a 19 minute drive from Tauhei Rd through Maungateparu Loop Road to Morrinsville.

This warmth worries me because I figure at what point do they become too hot and turn to crap, will this mean that my tyres are going to disappear in a hurry and what mileages did people get on these tyres?

Also on a similar subject can anyone shed some light on why my rear tyres might be wearing heavier on the sides (not one side more than the other though) than on the front. I'm thinking that this is caused by sideways forces on the rear tyres and angles etc but any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated

For the wear on the sides of the tyres, if there is even wear on both side's more than the middle it can indicate that the tyre pressures are to low. Just as wear in the middle and not the edges will indicate tyre pressures to high.

As for heat I don't have those tyres but I have felt some of mine after a spirted drive and they do get quite hot.

Pressures are 35 PSI all-round. I had thought that the tyre wear may be because of tyre pressures but thought that since they are the same at the front and they don't have that issue it wouldn't be caused by tyre pressures.

Temperature wise I mean like heating duct warm. The sort that you can hold your hand on but it starts to not so much hurt but you definately want to move you're hand away.

from memory most of the GT radial range are rated as a fairly 'hot' tyres, like an AA temp rating or something?
