Well my 3sgte cost about $8000 , including Pistons, rods oil pump crank balancing etc.

So thats about a safe ball park figure depending what level of " recondition " you require and want.

What isnt involved is dependant on what you want done, if you just want head work then theres no work on the bottom end except a surfacing and new headgasket, If you how ever want a full do dakey downstairs to then your basically starting from fresh.

Also ive moved this to tech as technically its a tech question.. Hopefully there you will get more help.

There are a few reconditioning outfits in Welly, Kerry Lindsay and Headmasters spring to mind.
Reconditioning involves stripping the motor into individual parts, inspecting them for wear, and replacing the parts that are out of tolerance.
The cost will be as high as you let it be, depending on what you can do to make the job easier. ie supply them the shortblock with new rings and bearings, or if you have to drop the car off to them.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

PM CAMB01 on here, he works for Kerry Lindsays Porirua Branch, (they've also got shops in Petone and upper hutt as well)

Or as Dell'orto said, you could try Headmasters (on Vivian St). I've had quite a bit of machining work done by them, and they've been easy to deal with. I've also had work done by Giles Engine Reconditioners (on Taranaki St) which as also been very good.

Cost? i think the last time i got an engine re-conned it cost me $2000 inc gst and parts, and that was for a complete silvertop 20v rebuild at Giles in 2003. Depending on what you want to do/what needs doing, you could spend that much on just the machining side of things (without any assembly cost)

for how easy it is to remove a 4agze i would reccommend removing it yourself, and getting a few prices on a rebuild before dropping it in.
you'll probly save yourself up to 1k on labour costs removing the engine , and they arent too hard to do.

is there anything actually wrong with the engine? because that may increase the cost if the block or crank are damaged etc.
id say if you were to walk in off the street for a 4agze recondition you'd be looking at 2-4k.

you could probly save a lot on parts by sourcing them through warwick.

if you're wanting to rebuild it because its just old i wouldnt bother, these engines go forever

read his project thread and you'll see its probly a fair price. his includes forged pistons and aftermarket rods etc that arent really applicable to a standard rebuild.

Cheers fly, Yeah im not talking about the sole labour cost im talking about all up engine work and parts, from the small things such as oil pumps to the larger forged pistons and rods.

By the sounds of things my pistons and rods alone cost about the same as yours all up.
