CV nut!!!!

Postby TRD_ZERO » Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:51 pm

OK i got a couple broken studs on my left wheel. Ive tried taking the CV nut off and it doesnt wanna budge. Ive used a electric rattle gun and broke a sydchrome power bar the length of my arm on this stupid thing. I thought i might be turning it the wrong way(maybe it being reverse thread) but tested a spare cv nut on the and it goes on clockwise to tighten. How the hell do i get this stupid thing off.

I used a big long bit of tube on the end of a breaker bar, have you doused it in CRC or something over night to help?

You shouldnt need to remove the hub to take the studs out and put new ones in? What car is it?

you can buy special sockets that get the whole nut, i know that average powerbuilt items arnt long enough and there is a chance of rounding, how long was the socket on the rattle gun, sounds weird :?

Put a long piece of tube or a jack handle or something on the end of the power bar, leverage is your friend.

there is a special axle nut impact socket that is deep tube. i used a length of scaffold pole ~1m long on the end of my socket.

mechanics also sometimes punch the side of the nut to lock it in place.

We used leverage on the last power bar and snap. I bought that powerbuilt one like in the picture and a long jack handle and all my weight to crack it. The whole car was just rocking all over the place but nothing. I dnt have a massive extenstion handle as i was using my mates. I might have to take it in to get it rattled off or some sh!t. Man this is crap doesnt mitsi have a little slot where you can just punch the studs out into without taking the hub off?

Sometimes they do freeze up extremely tight

You need to be a bit careful about using heat around your hubs, but a bit warmth from the torch on the nut itself will usually make the nut just about fall off, so that might be worth trying.

Otherwise just get in there and split it with a chisel or cut it off.

But as above, you shouldnt need to remove the cv to replace the studs, infact removing that is nfg to you unless you're also going to take the bearing etc to bits which basically means replcaing the bearing....

Just knock the broken studd out with a hammer and then slot the new one in and pull it up tight.......

Ha ha yeah sure
I broke one wheel stud off then broke a massive powerbar within the space of 10 minutes. My guns are more than capable
Damn that slot thing i didnt think of it until i put the wheel back on ill check it out again later. Im going to have to take the cv nut off at a later date anyway as ill be putting fatter cvs in. Ill keep that powerbuilt power bar as i got it half price and i bet ill be using it again.

gasman wins, i broke a couple half inch powerbars on CV nuts at work before i decided enough was enough

we've got a 2 metre pole that i use when they are really stubborn, as someone mentioned above it should have a cutout in the thread where the wall of the nut has been punched in - make sure thats clear before you try and turn it.

and punch it back in when putting it back together, they can gradually vibrate loose.

I ended up using about a 5mm drill and drilling right in between the thread and the nut on Adydas' car. Once i did that it came off so easy... didnt have any heat handy so had to drill :)
