Great advise above, Very helpfull..

Sounds like you have a serious case on your hands, could mean you have to replace the airbag unit inorder to keep a WOF, you seem to allready be aware of the fact that with that failing your WOF is seriously on the cards.

My suggestion would be take it to Toyota and talk to them about checking it out, resetting it and hopeiung its allright.

dont mess around taking the bulb out, you'll still fail a WOF if the inspector is even half awake.

just get it fixed, do you really want a (possibly) faulty air bag aimed at your head?

Most likely the airbag ecu, it's about $700 odd off the top of my head, quite comon on the ae111's (I'm assuming thats what you have)

Yeah,

we do Airbag stuff at work all the time.

Just go to a firm that has a scan tool to read codes or they will end up getting it done as outwork anyway.

I assume that it is ok to get A/M wheel and get it certed ? I have done a wee phone around and first stop is toyota to see if there is any error codes then perhaps a autosparky and yes it is a 98 ae11 bzr

i believe the only legal way to get away with no airbag is to turn it into a race car - ie full roll cage, log book, etc etc

yeah, you cant just remove the airbag from the car and put a momo wheel on it.. If it has an airbag standard its going to need one to continue getting wofs on nz roads..

only non race car i know of having it done was a prado, that was often used off road and had rather heavy duty bull bars and undertrays.
i doubt it would pass these days

i got quoted $650 from toyota, but ended up finding a wrecker that gets them in new for $300

my light used to come on, got the codes checked and ended up being the ecu.

You can get the airbagg removed and certed as such. You'll need to remove any sign that it had an airbag fitted or put big labels in the car saying airbag is removed. Look at the vehicle interior section of the VIRM on page 7-6-1

go to a sparky you trust, a lot of the time the problem is because a fuse that provides backup source to the airbag has gone. In my old falcon the fuse for the rear lights went and this as it happenned ws the backup source for the airbag so the light came on. Your best bet is to go to a sparky and get it scanned, but get them to explain what the error code is before they do the work. That way you may be able to avoid a costly ecu replacement, if the problem is just the fuse.

ost sparkys are all good, but theres a guy down the road from me i dont go to anymore after he tried to take me for a ride on price.

It's the actual ecu that craps out, it's very common on the ae111's. Hence why the ecus are so cheap. Most are $1000+ new.
