How would you remove a crank sprocket?

Postby ollieboy » Sun Oct 28, 2007 10:52 pm

On a 4age. I've soaked it in CRC- used various things to try and pry it off, tried a puller that didn't fit and now I'm out of ideas. Should it be this difficult to get it off? I've taken sprockets off before and they just slid off without too much prying.

Cheers for any help/ideas.

Yeap.

if it that's tough to get off, anything except the right tool will only do damage.

If you get stuck like me, use angle grinder to grind in slots for biggest gear puller you have, and use this, and then order new sprocket from Revhead, they go about ~$40+gst.

I've tried a puller but they are too big and I can't seem to find one small enough. The oil seal behind it is leaking so I'm wanting to replace it.

Thanks for the ideas- I'll use that one as a very last resort sergei :)

Thanks guys.

I usually use 2 flat head screwdrivers from the sides (opposite sides) and lever them both at the same time. Be careful what you lever off though, and how hard you pull. If it wont come like that you will have to aquire and use the correct size puller like matt said.
Also check that the keyway isn't doing anything weird that might be jamming it.

I've got it moving backwards and forwards and all this red crap is coming out-either rust or some kind of sealant. The gap seems to be getting bigger so if I just pull it backwards and forwards for a while and spray more crc in there it will hopefully come off.

Yeah I finally got it off just then. I'm bloody stoked, it's been a mission. Now I'm going to put it back on
