AE92 black 20V - I need more power - any suggestions

Postby glenb20V » Thu Nov 01, 2007 8:54 pm

Hi All. Best to ask other Toyota guru's. I have an AE92 with a black top 20V in it, has a link and K&N intake. I race it regulary on seal in club events, consistantly 2nd - 3rd in class (F*#@ING Honda's). suspension is billstein, brakes are celica disks and mintex pads. it's a good fast car, providing there are lots of corners.

I Need more straight line speed, any suggestions? I am after the best bang for my bucks. Cams? close ratio box? head work? exhaust? has anyone really experimented with a black top like this, without spending shit loads of money?

aparently theres not too much (without spending alot of money) that can be done to the head as it flows well from factory.

i would go for bigger cams if i were you

from every thing that I have read, the ports are normally pretty good except for a few dags here and there, but a good five angle valve cut is always a good starter. I was considering cams, but haven't looked at the cost as of yet.

close ratio is real real good... but mostly for corners

Id say cams and abit more comp, but if you want to keep reving do the rods

Are you running a LSD? If not, that's going to help you out of the corners.

Other than that, pretty much you're stuck with taking as much weight as possible out of the car, and driving like a homicidal maniac.

Best tyres possible will help too.

Power without spending a shitload ... um ....

I ran sticky Kumho tyrs for the Taranaki rally an dthey were fantastic, then ruined them on the track at taupo. LSD is a bit sad now too I think, I'm hoping that fresh oil might fix that.
already driving fairly hard, take a look at you tube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c4yk0jmibU
mid stage I ran out of talent.
and this was freaky, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjy6Bq65CDM
just got on the gas and found a car in the middle of the road.

Rallysprint looked like fun.

Pucker facter *extreme* for the sprint.

Maybe you can get a stupidly short diff ratio, more punch out of corners. It does look like you've got fairly tall gearing for a sprint car, if the first vid is anything to go by.

Oh, and try cleaning your windscreen before the run   Since you're washing your screen in the middle of both those videos.

he's racing in club type events and it puts you into a totally different class.
i get sick of people telling me to do this to mine when they know nothing about the class system!

Lose the gay V stickers first :P

Its Blair, yes the very same Blair who crewed for ya in Taranaki Tarmac Rally :P not that we had to do much

Losing weight where possible would be my first point of call. Your front strut brace its rather large and steel isnt it? Small weight savings could be gained there.

Others have removed sound deadening from inside the car, this saves a little also.

Have you had your final tune with the Link or still running it on what you were before? There might be gains there.

Other than those then its time to open the chq book as gaining power with a N/A don't come cheap.

pull the head... get some "rally" cams and springs do sumthen to adjust the pulleys, skim the head .4-.6mm + TRD heady, push pistons out the top an put silvertop rods in...

adds up quick but that sort of combo should get you going abit quicker, what gearbox are you using? try a c56 and throw your lsd in

Hi Blair and Garnett, good to hear from you guys.
Garnett was the Black MR2 I was behind beforde the other one lost it, roughly did the same times, MR2 a little faster I think. Blair was the good bugger that said yes to crewing for someone he didn't even really know for a rally.

I priced up CAMS today from kelfords, yikes, the wife wants a new deck first.

Diff is a standard LSD for a black top. for those that want to know. I am going to get rid of the glass and inside doors etc but it is exoensive for the good stuff.

1040Kg in full rally trim and spare wheel with half tank of gas, no pilots though.

Going to get back to gravel next week, just been in the shed dropping the suspension out.

Everyone should check this out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LH2wjORSHo
one of the guys in our club made it and it is bloody awsome. (well I think so any way)

Mr RevHead. why silver top rods?????

Cheers guys, have a good one.

oh yeah Blair, AKA (2LTR Rona), what oil did you say to put in the gearbox? The oil is looking like metalic slush now so I need to change it.

Also havn't tunned it yet, need some sponsored expertise and dyno time. looking at cams too.

What version of the Khumo's?
V700, V70A, C03?

Different ones are good for different purposes,
and with some of them have had a real bad run.

blacktop, rods cant handle over reving, hard time, etc
i would talk to company called psp plastics and make the window plastic there should save good weight there, u dont need lenso plastic on sides windows (i can get it if u want know few ppl there) wouldn't touch the front and rear windows as u need lenso plastic for them also scratchs easy, hard to fit and make a good seal.

$$$$ for cams builds fast as you need all the gear to follow... springs, gears

Silvertop rods should be on top of the list for the style of driving... to save you from blowing the engine to bits.
