Front Wheel Drive Diff oil

Postby darkwolf » Sun Dec 02, 2007 7:13 pm

Before anyone says. I tried searching and it constantly tells me that their are no searches matching my description (including searching toyota).

So, with that in mind, I ask my question.

On a front wheel drive gearbox is the diff oil and gearbox oil the same? I.e. when you fill up your gearbox with oil, does the diff get filled up at the same time?

At the moment I think I'm having issues with my diff, as it seems to be sending more power to one wheel than the other. This leads me to the idea that the diff oil might be a factor as I can't hear any noise from it.

Thanks. That clears that up. Might be in the market for a new gearbox then. Anyone know the price of a rebuild for a gearbox? :(

full rebuild 2-3k i should think, but doesnt sound like your gearbox is the issue, just the diff.

don't get carried away too soon. what sort of lsd are you talking? factory diff or aftermarket lsd? you can get most aftermarket ones rebuilt.

Hehe nah nothing as complicated as a LSD. It's only my ST171 2.0GL Corona. I'm just over trying to find a second hand box to replace my busted ones. They are too hard to find a good box for. Figure a rebuild my solve this problem.

Anyway, running a 1989 3S-F at 310,908 KM

Not always, my last fwd had the diff (viscous lsd) sealed with its own oil.

Yeah thought that would be the case, can't remember seeing one on any of them so far (count 2) but will certainly check it out tonight.
