all depends on the guy fitting the tryes... but 8" is 203mm and 9" is 228 so they need to be less than that... so for strech you'd want 185's on the 8'd and 195 or 205 on the 9's trouble is finding some low enough profile to make it look decent.
i've run 185-55-14's on my 8's and there pretty stretched

but on my 14x7 on my car at the mo i have 185-60's and the ones on the front look streched but the rears dont this is because i have a flat sidewall on the fronts and round sidewall on the rears

no its coz the reson people want wider rims is so they can have a few zizes less of rubber yo... less ruber must mean better traction ofcorse

I think it is for the "drift look yo" or something... personally I prefer safety over supposed "good looking" tyres.

Why don't they just buy thinner rims then? IMO theres bugger all point buying wide rims if you cant use them for wide rubber . . . . Isn't that the point of wide rims??

The beauty of hindsight.

"bro, these rims are BAAADD....look how much DISH!!!"

*puts phone/ciggy pack into rim*

"brooooooo"

*buys*

"holy shit, tires to fit these are expensive......didn't think about that"

*buys cheaper, skinny tires, and stretches them on, for that gangsta d1 phat skiddz au look*

big rims are cool, big tires are expensive.

Sold a set of 9" rims to a guy a while ago, he came back trying to get his money back because i never told him tires would be so expensive :/

now i'm trying to squeeze 235s onto 7.5" rims... DOH!

forget all the hate in here, if your after stretch then go for it,
make sure you buy a tire with stiff side wall or else you'll get a balloon look not stretching look

i have had 175/45/14 on 9" wide longchamp rims, got pics if your interested.
my tyre guy almost pulled all his hair out trying to fit it, so unless you know a good mate who is a really good tyre fitter, i'd play it safe and use 185.

faq of the day:
"stretch look" was started in Europe NOT japan as many may think.

Not necessarily. Steel wheels can flex and cause a car to not handle as well as the same car in exactly the same situation but with alloy wheels.

I have a set of nice light weight wedsport rims on my car, saves approx 2kg per rim, they came with the car, but if it had had steels on it, I'd have grabed a set of what I have currently.

You'll happily stretch a 185/60 across the 9 inch, and I reckon a 175/65 across the 8 inch just to keep the rolling diameter similar. They'll look sweet as well. Def good advice about the stiff sidewall too, things like Yoko A539's are a good bet as far as sidewall goes...

Frost, post up some pics of you 14x9's with 175's, damn that'd look hot 8)

My old flatmate had 185's on a 7.5" rim, they only looked mildly stretched! Yet still cool.

I've never heard of any safety issues concerning stretch, I've had a couple of issues with the beads leaking on my very very mildly stretched 175's, and I can't in any way see a performance issue like some state?

I'd have a stretched tyre over a ballooning tyre any day... although a set of 13x5.5 Cheviot Turbo's running 215/60's is sooooo appealing.

Explain....

The way I see it, my Starlet came out with 155's factory. So, realistically, it's going to behave best on something not overly wider, ie. if I was to run an 8 inch rim because I love wide wheels, then to use a tyre that fits that rim 'properly' is going to be detrimental - it'l tramline, aquaplane in the wet, etc etc.

So, if I want to run my sweet, sweet set of 13x8" Hayashi Street fins with epic offset, and maintain some kind of sensible handling, then I'm going to choose something like a 175, and I'll get the advantages of an increased contact patch, while getting none of the disadvantages of having tyres too wide for the car. Plus I can store cigarettes, mobile phones and small furry animals in the resultant dish my car now has.

All hypothetically of course :D

Plus, it'l look so sweet, and I can rofl heartily at everyone rolling balloon stz.
