Is the engine and starter earthed to the body as it would be from the factory?
A lot of issues arise from poor earthing.

I know my car benefits greatly from taking the battery out every 2 months and charging it up.

bad earths? check for rust and corrosion on terminals and under lugs etc

dodgy jumper lead? i got caught out by this , took me ages to figure it out

is battery is original place?

all factory earthing wires in place? 4age usually has some between box and engine, engine and chassis, box and chassis, if not put some in.

terminals on starter motor done up tight?

try a couple of different batteries for good measure.

try another starter motor if you can get one spare?

i had a thread some where of what i went through when i had the same issues after the car had been sitting for ages. turned out to be loads of little things all adding up.

could also be jumper leeds cause i only have one set in my fx.dont no meny people with em either :P

have not yet placed a battery into the car just jumper leeded it of my other one. lots of little bits i need to check but looks like it wont be today

I had similar symptoms a few years back, turned out to be the oil (Mobil 1 FTW................ NOT) slowly seizing the engine, Disassembled the engine and found it had basically turned to gluey crap like substance right through the engine.

But probably nothing to do with your problem, just throwing an idea into the hat

Is the starter motor under the exhaust manifold?,if it is ,it may require overhauling/reconditioning/replacement as they don`t handle the heat from the exhaust very well.Happened to one of my Levins, turned over very slow,I replaced the starter motor, fired up instantly after fitting replacement starter.

those old starters suck, try to get a 20v starter and mount it under the intake mani if your gearbox will allow, they go way better

oh yeah didnt realise you were running a front of box starter.
i know someone who had issues with the starter motor getting hot during running and then wouldnt start until it had cooled down. that was a 20v conversion though and probly isnt related.
easy to rule out if you have spare starter handy.

You'll need the right backing plate to suit as well.
