Removal of Secondary Muffler

Postby darkwolf » Sun Dec 09, 2007 9:21 pm

It's christmas time and as per usual, I have lots of work to do on my car :(

So I'll start with my exhaust system. As it stands I have a 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" standard exhaust system on my car. Pitstop last year in there wisdom installed a 1 1/2" section to replace a section that was cracked. I noticed that this was causing problems and decided at some point I would replace it ... but... as things happen I never got round to it.

My problem now is that I have a cracked first muffler. In the inlet and the outlet - makes it sound like it isn't connected. I believe this has probably been caused by the small pipe after the muffler. So I now need to replace it and that section of pipe at the same time.

Now with all the background information that I have provided. Would I be able to remove this muffler and change it for a straight exhaust through to my muffler on the rear of my car? I have read the LTSA guidelines for the exhaust system and it states I must have a resonator or silencer, so I assume my rear muffler will be sufficient.

I don't want a loud droning exhaust as I find that is more for wank factor than anything.

Will this be ok for warrants etc. Is it likely to sound drony and annoying?

That should explain what it says above. Oh and I already know I have the mad mspaint skills, so thanks.

See that's kinda the problem. I don't want an exhaust that makes talking in the car difficult. I already have rattles that I can't find :x My tyres are loudish at 100KPH and I think an exhaust that got in the way might just drive me over the edge.

I read it but missed what car this is for

i'd replace it with a resonator at least, if not another muffler. Taking it out will make it louder than it is now and it will most likely sound like ass with just a straight through muffler on the end. Could create WOF problems too if it increases the noise level too much.

I'm just using a factory muffler on the rear.

3S-F powered 1989 Toyota Corona. Didn't put it in as I didn't think it would make that much of a difference.

My thoughts were that the exhaust at the moment is super quiet. It sounds nice-ish at the moment with no connection but does seem to drone. It also sounds like crap from 4K up. I figured reattaching the rear and would give me what I want.

But as I now need two new tyres, possibly a new gearbox/diff to remove some rust above the windscreen and repaint the roof of the car as well as at some point get round to removing the crappy drums at the back and replacing them with discs and should probably replace the shocks also (maintenance thing mainly). I'd try asking some questions before spending money.

Personally, I would put in a resonator at least.. it will help keep the noise down - and they're pretty cheap...

OK so as an update. I might be able to get my hands on some aluminium pipe. I'm assuming though that the aluminium will have a melting point too low for an exhaust so close to the engine. Correct? If so, then back to the drawing board.

Not only the melting piont, but getting it welded to steel aint gonna be easy or cheap, unless you use flanges, in which case you will still need the flanges welded to the ali pipe, which most exhaust shops cant do.

Theres probably heaps of other reasons not to use it too.

straight pipe with a turbo-flow muffler.

expected it to be real noisy on my old Starlet but in fact was quieter than standard dual muffler set-up, althought tubing was 1/4" bigger than stock

if you just want some unbent pipe its cheap as chips at a pipe supplier and not really expensive from pitstop etc. I got several meters a few months back from the local pitstop for $20 and a few bends done
(welded myself)
