how long can your reg be on hold for?

Postby flygt4 » Tue Jan 01, 2008 7:54 pm

is there a maximum time you can have your rego on hold for?

ie do you get to a point where you can't just get a wof and go buy your registration?

On the form you fill out to put your rego on hold there is default period of 3 months or you can pick a period of up to 12 months.
At the end of the period they will send out a registration renewal form (the standard one you always get) and you can then go in and put the rego on hold for another 12 months.
NOTE - make sure you have a reliable address for them to send the form, otherwise the rego will become live again (normal $ fee owing) and after (another) 12 months it will lapse.
I write when I put the rego on hold on the rego sticker in the car so I know when it's time is up.
NOTE - minimum period is 3 months - if you put rego on hold then re reg the car within 3 months you will have to pay the rego fee for that 3 months!

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Yep, the sedan has been on reg hold for coming up 2 years now....they send you out a reminder in the mail when the exemption is about to expire anyway.

If you try to apply for an exemption and the car already has an exemption from the previous owner do you have to get the exemption in your name or is this taken car of with the change of ownership?

Also will the reminder notice to relicense at the end of the exemption period go to me of the person who applied for the exemption in the first place?

I'm optimistic to get mine back on the road this year, so if I put it on hold 12 months and wanted it on the road before then, you have to pay (as far as i know) the full 12 months rego back dated to when you put it on hold.

when you buy a car thats rego is on hold, when you register it in your name you will recieve the reminder. I can't recall exactly, but I think when I changed rego to my name on mine I could either put it back on road straight away, or continue the reg on hold status

Ill let you in on something. Was a couple of years ago, but I put my car on hold for 12 months.
3 months later car was ready so went and put 6 months rego on it.
The 6 months rego started after the exemption was due to finish!
So the expiry date on the rego was 15 months from the day I purchased it! 8O
SCORE!! 9 months free rego! :D

from what I read.... you had car rego on hold for 12 months...... then you pay for 6 months actual registration which starts AFTER that 12 months.... so get caught driving it before the 12 months is over and your car rego might be on hold...... i'm confused now tho :? doubt there would be a loop hole that easy

Nope its, if you put a car on hold, it must be for a minimum of three months.
So if you decide to register it within 3 months you must pay for anything short of that + what you're asking for.

If you put it on hold for say 12 months, as long as its over 3 months on hold the rego is paid for from the day you put the car "back on the road"

Maybe the post shop lady didnt know what she was doing then.
But I told them it was going back on the road however the registration started from when the exemption finished and thats all I paid for.

Was told it was fine to drive on the road and the rego looked legit.
Would have been fine going through a checkpoint.
But from what your saying I could have been done if the cops actually checked it out.

I bought a car that was under exemption. Once I'd done the change of ownership, I just filled out the new exemption form as well.

The Rego fees are from when the change of ownership is done, so I figured I'll need to do my own exemption then.

Which I tried to do online last night. Unfortunately I was told that the reg was already on hold so couldn't/didnt do anything except email the people and find out what the deal was.
