smallport head keepers

Postby bluemaumau » Thu Jan 24, 2008 11:05 pm

interesting today,

im getting my head i bought for my 4agte(smallport)
rebuilt for the hell of it as it looked mint.
a friend whos doing it for next to nothing called me today to give a update.

he said hes hardly ever seen keepers snap in half before and 13 of my 32 were snapped!!!!

(lucky im getting it rebuilt(dodged a bullet there)) 8)

is it just high revs that does this?
id never even heard of keepers before so it kind of stunned me

The keepers in 4ages are in 2 parts. They are tapered cylinder looking things.

that is if he is talking about spring keepers, im more concerned about the ones that arnt "snapped in half", are they glued together? haha

What is being rebuilt in the head? New valves, valve guides, springs, and shim/buckets?

You shoulda swung by mine when you came got those tickets man, i woulda shown you some head shit cause im rebuilding a bigport head atm.

the collets should be 2 piece, wouldnt get them in or out other wise, they are the tapered cone pieces at the top

the keepers / retainers are the round 'disks' one end has a tapered hole, the other end has a lip to sit over the valve springs,

if the keepers were broken id be a bit worried, got any pics of the broken bits?

No we are basically saying the same thing in a different way.

evil_si is asking for a picture so we can see what you mean by borken. If you think its broken in half, then its not broken at all.

But if theres heaps of little chunks and sand like stuff then yea youd be in trouble.

The quality of steel they are made out of those is very high i you would have to be doing something fairly crazy (like running high lift cams on standard springs and valves) or ringing it out to like 10 grand i dont see how they would break?

You will find most toyotas share the same keepers (if we're talking collets here). So you're best to take a couple of old ones to an engine rebuilder and they will no doubt have hundreds lying around.

Weird, I would have thought that a collett snapped in half would have slipped. If so it would have released the retainer and the valve dropped into the cylinder. They are also a hardened steel. I would have thought they would have worn or shattered rather than snap.
