stock for stock, blacktop is the best performer.

run it factory and i'm sure that will be a BIG improvement over a 4k

changing other parts will be determined by your budget.... the more you have, the more you can upgrade

how much what? the whole conversion? piece of string would be a good line to use now

the coolant inlet is at the wrong end of the engine too. theres ways around both problems but overall a 16v (get a smallport) will be cheaper and easier.

forget about carbs!

gearbox and diffs, depends on how long you want them to last / how much abuse you plan on giving it.

an idea of your budget might help people give advice on where its best spent.

agreed 16v smallport, make sure you get the loom and gearbox etc and you'll be fine.

I was assuming a bottomless wallet  I would also go small port tho if said wallet has its limit.

To be asking the above questions tho, either its a workshop job, or research hasn't been done yet...

I personally dont like blacktops aye.

After watching a mate put a piston through the side of his block after freshly installing his one into his 86 they have gone down in my list of desirable engines.

Blow for blow 16v is cheaper and easier to modify. I mean look on trademe and you can find a 16v head for $40!

Big port 16v you can slap a turbo on the side for next to nothing with very few modifications.

www.garagedori.com

Look in there tech section for 4age modifications and dyno sheets.

Also i have writern a smallish guide on how to 4age your rwd.

Carbs on a 4age tho are as sexy as girls at the beach, and with some head work and balanced bottom end you can get a bigport with smallport head to easily crack 10k rpm (just go watch some best motoring and japanese option DVD's)

Carb also means less fuel line work as you dont need to put in bigger fuel lines, surge tank, lifter pump and EFI fuel pump.

For extractors get some wolf 4 - 1's, dont get cobys. Cobys dont really give a noticeable power increase, where wolfs give you a lot more balls down low and a beautiful exhaust note up high.

Brakes, drum rear is fine, and ae85 fronts with toyota pads do the job up front. Putting in an uprated brake booster (ae86 or r32 skyline) will give far more pedal response as well.

How much, depends i did my conversion to my 85 for around $2300, that includes everything, but i did all the work to it myself. I rebuilt the engine (gaskets, bearings, rings), got HPC coated extractors ($$$), 500hp rated fuel system ($$$) and custom made 2 1/4" exhaust.
If you cant wire it in yourself or rebuild the motor yourself its going to cost you there, but you can save with not having such an over the top fuel and exhaust system. You will need some engine mounts made up but i believe they are relatively common/cheap
