Corsa rear seat belts not 'locking'

Postby Wildcard » Fri Feb 01, 2008 9:52 pm

Right, so my parents have a 1995 Corsa as their run around car :)

The car is in mint condition and the front belts in the car work fine. The rears look to be in good condition but do not 'lock' when pulled out abruptly. Both rear seatbelts exhibit this behavior.

Conversely my girlfriend has a Corsa hatchback of the same year and the back belts lock instantly in the same scenario.

What could be wrong? The belt mechanism looks fine to the casual observer and I just can't imagine that both rear belts would have developed the exact same problem when the car is in such good condition.

If the answer is simply 'replace them', ideas on their cost from a wrecker?

Did you test them while the car was moving??

Depends on if they are aftermarket or stock Toyota items.

Aftermarket may be due to them not being at the correct angle to work properly at a standstill.

Unless someone has done something stupid like replace the webbing on a single action belt mechanism then they should stop if pulled fast. However sometimes the locking mechanism sticks if it doesn't get used much. Only safe solution in that case is to replace the belts, they are a non-serviceable item.

They are a certain type of seatbelt
typical for that year but they wont lock
if you give them the 'tug test'. I know
this as i am a wof inspector and came across
this before in a toyota cynos.

Go for a drive and put the brakes on, you'll notice that the front belts will lock if you try to pull them out under braking. Check the rear belts by holding one and braking in the same manner, or get someone to sit in the back and see if they lock. If so then they should be legal.

Difference is they will be single sensitive if they work just like that, if they work like the front belts then they are dual sensitive. Either is legal for the back seats in this case

When did it become legal to have single sensitive belts in a rear seating position?

I must admit I haven't had anything to do with the seatbelt industry for the last 10 years, but it certainly wasn't legal back then. Seems strange that they would reduce safety in such a manner whilst toughening up frontal impact laws :?

You can retain the single sensitives in the front if they were fitted OE if you really wanted to go through the motions.

Section 7 was pretty much rewritten for version 3 of the VIRM, but I haven't had a problem with my rear seat belts and that was a while before it came out.

Have a look at 7-5-3 Fivebob (the the previous tables if you want to)

http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/certif ... -07-v3.pdf

Not sure when/if it was changed, but that just says anything from 02 onwards basically can have any belt in the rear outer as long as it retracts
