2E Corolla carburettor issues

Postby Scooby » Tue Feb 26, 2008 4:25 pm

Hi all. I know this is my first time posting and I know my car is a piece of crap but aside from taking it to a mechanic and forking out this was the only other place to ask that I could think of. Thanks a lot for any help!

So i've got a 1989 Corolla with a 1.3 carby (2E) in it. I've been away from 3 months and haven't used it and it ran fine before but now the idle is very weak and rough (sometimes stalls) and it has little to no power once you get moving. If you go for a bit then stop it'll stall and it's also pretty hard to start. When you rev it in neutral it pumps out a lot of grey smoke and the engine itself is moving about quite a bit. It's done about 250k so it's pretty old and tired but i'm just wanting to get it driving around again. From these symptoms does anyone know if it sounds like the carb needs adjusting, spark plugs are old, air intake is blocked or anything like that? Not really too clued up on the ways of the carburettor.

Any help would be much appreciated.

have you tried some fresh petrol, petrol can go stale if left to sit for a while.

when was the oil last replaced?

Possible flooding issue with the carb.

Those symptoms you describe are very close if not the same as what Santa (user on here) had with his corolla with a 2E in it.

Basically when the throttle was being opened way too much fuel was being dumped in the carb causing it to flood, resulting in it either fart arsing around or at times completly die.

We ended up rebuilding his carb (while half cut I might add) with the simple re-build kits you get from the likes of BNT etc.

If I was you I would be starting with the basicis.

    check air filter is clean.
check plugs are clean i.e. not black & totally wet with oil
check for good spark on each plug

replacing fuel wouldn't be a bad thing to do either.
Also when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? No point in having fresh fuel in it if its sending through crap.

pretty sure we didnt fix that carb in the end, though it might have had something to do with amount of liquor drunk during the rebuilding process

There are two types of carbs for 2E, If its got the SU type carb, just get rid of it, honestly not worth messing with, the most common problem with those is hard starting when hot, the choke valves play up on them, they are ugly and always give problems!.

i work with 3 ex Toyota Mechanics and they used to replace them with downdraught manuel choke carbs/ manifolds. A local toyota wrecker here sold DD carb and manifolds etc as a kit cos SU type carbs gave so much probs.

ring around and see if you can pick one up.
