Fuel pumps with surge tank setup

Postby nz_climber » Wed Feb 27, 2008 8:53 pm

Hi there I will be putting a surge tank in my new car, Engine is Altezza Beams 3SGE, going into a lotus 7 replica

I have the fuel pump to match the engine, but its a internal tank type, can I just remove the extra plastic housing and use it as the external pump high pressure pump from surge tank to engine?

I guess these pumps don't need fuel around them to keep them cool?
Another idea is to mount it inside the surge tank..

Also what sort of pump do people use to fill the surge tank? I am guessing low pressure, low volume? where do you get them from?

Also engine is staying very standard, so don't need to buy a new high pressure pump if i don't have to.. as standard item will be more than powerful enough

cheers aaron

IMO an internal pump cannot be converted to external pump,

so mount it in the surge tank, or better, buy another external pump.

and to fill the surge tank,

you could actually use the current intank pump to fill the surge tank,
doesn't matter that it's high pressure, as there will be no resistance so not a lot of pressure, so just means it will flow more on open flow.

go Factory pump to surge tank, high volume External pump from surge to fuel rail, return from rail to surge tank, and if wanted/necessary return from surge tank to main fuel tank.

Of coures it is necessary.

How would that not be required?
What happens when the surge is full and there is no return to the main tank?
Either the pump must stall as no fuel flows and will pressurise the surge tank to the capability of the pump, which is the original is used will be 70 to 100psi,
or it will all flow out the vent if it has one.

Only time you can get away with it is when you fit a low pressure carby type pump which will stop at about 6psi instead of way past 60.

i would recommend having a return from the surge tank to the main tank, especially if you use the std intank pump (like i am)

cheers guys, guess I will be have to save for a new fuel pump aswell, will probably get a small low pressure pump to fill the surge tank, which will save trying to fabricate the altezza pump into the tank..

Anyone know what pressure the altezza fuel system runs at?

Also does anyone run a float switch in their surge tank, that way the low pressure pump only fills the surge tank when its drops below the 3/4 mark (save running it full time)??

nah, i just run them all the time,

your surge tank should be around 2L tall and skinny (ideal)

your little pump wont run for long with no fuel. hence where gettign the proper lift pump helps, pm bazda
