Intermittent starting problem (92 Mr2 GT-S)

Postby Timmo » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:43 am

Hey

Im having an intermittent problem starting my car- There is discussion over at the Mr2 club (http://mr2.org.nz/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4861) for some more details but basically:

1) The car sometimes (like 9/10 times) wont start- The starter motor will turn but the car wont fire. I havent been able to link it to a condition (i.e. it happens when the car is cold or hot, it doesnt appear that it has a greater chance of starting if its been sitting for a while etc)
2) It doesnt appear to be related to the immobiliser as when the car is immobilised, the starter doesnt even turn (i.e. it breaks the connection at/before the ignition)
3) the previous owner thinks the ignitor was on the way out....I checked this last night and there did appear to be some gunk/moisture around the plug from the ignitor
4) Plugs and leads- Connections look OK but ill replace these this weekend
5) Dissy and Rotor- havent checked these yet
6) When it starts the car is 100% fine....so im thinking its something electrical.

So have a read, any ideas would be appreciated.

Also, I would like to get an idea of the price of a new ignitor, condensor, leads and 4 standard plugs :)

1st: Check spark, check this over a long period of time, make sure there's always spark everytime. check this by unplugging one of the plugs with it's side touching the block for grounding. You know the drill. Pick random plugs everytime.

If it's spark related, then we can look into leads, dizzy and the igniter.

2) if it's not spark related, check for fuel. There's a banjo bolt I believe that leads into the injector rail, take it off and place it in a container (so if there's fuel it won't go everywhere and start a fire), and crank the car etc.

Those are the things you need to do first.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
