ARP head stud v. CAS

Postby bluemaumau » Fri Feb 29, 2008 11:48 pm

4age 16v

the stud below the CAS (exh cyc 1)

it goes furthur down than the rest - i assume this is to make way for the CAS drive (as it sits below the cam)

now everythings torqued up, and the cas is just touching the top of the stud,

what the $&#$% do i do?

will it be fine to just wind it down furthur? - i guess not.

file the edge off the stud? - integrity of bolt?

any help appreciated?

they should be all the same length, after being insalled. never had this issue with mine, you did put the studs in the correct locations i take it? all exhaust side studs being longer than intake ones. or the other way around, cant remember.

other than that there must have been crap in the bottom of the threaded holes in the block when you installed studs.

how do you get the crap out of the holes if that is the issue?

ill be pissed if it as the short block was fully cleaned and inspected and assembled by a engine builder.

Now I understand what your pm was on about,

but have not done a 16V with ARP myself.

As said a pic will be needed for any helpful info.

shouldn't matter i've had heaps taken off head, and the block has been skimmed as well, with no troubles.

id be very curious as to how many threads are actually screwed into the block
if they are in far enough it will be fine to grind the top of the stud down,

if you do grind it down and in place, mask off the area, if its clean tape should stick, be very wary of the cam journal oil feed holes, id ask off the entire area just leaving you the problem area to work in

ive taken the head off to make sure they were all right down. seemed to be :?

yup block decked
0.8mm trd metal hg
skimmed head.
nothing major.

i might just take the problem stud out, not the heads off and grind it down. anyone see any problems with that?

Measure how much of the stud sticks out,
pull it out measure the total lenght and the will tewll you how far it is into the block. Then measure the depth of the hole in th block and see what' what, and if there is another reason for it?

i can see when the heads off and just the studs are in hand tight that the problem stud, sits around a half a cm/cm lower than the rest, so its obviously supposed to sit lower, but its not

from memory they should go right down till you cant see any thread sticking out of the block. i know it says do them hand tight. but they may need a little tweak with an allen key, if your threads arent quit perfect.
pretty sure mine were all even as well.
