ST205 Super strut to non Superstrut Converstion

Postby NZVengeance » Fri Mar 07, 2008 3:00 pm

They guy that is doing the gearbox rebuild on my gt4 has fabricated himself new suspension arms etc so that his ST205 is no longer SS and is no a traditional McPherson strut. on Monday i will follow up with pictures etc on how this can be done for those who are interested.

Why would you do this conversion out of interest?

yea and TRD coilovers are like $4k and are average. where as McPherson's is half that and easy to replace/get parts for

?

It's no big deal to replace the Superstrut arms and is really just general maintenance. SS has an inherent cost savings from no rubber bushings to replace like Mcpherson.

Superstrut handling characteristics blows away Macpherson. Also the brakes are not a direct swap over.

Toyota were nice enough to give us a superior system than Macpherson. It would be a backwards step to swap it out.

it would be a backwards step for a road car but if you want track worthy suspension then its step forward there are to few SS track coil overs and even those are average.

what do you define as above average coil overs?

you could always make your own

and if your after some real coilovers, then ohlins and proflex will make some for you

Remove the guts of the stock shock, insert a Corolla Bilstein revalved for the heavier GT-Four. Weld adjustable platforms on and you are done.

Doing this to my ae85 right now.

But i dont get your argument that TRD coilovers are average. They blew my mind when driving the old mans car compared to standards on the old 205.

that they are average is probably not the best way to put it. there is better for the money.

The Group A 205's were converted to regular mcpherson by TTE.

Just because toyota gave it to us, doesnt mean we should be greatefull :)

The insanely heavy subframes is what annoys me the most... for the 94 WRC, subframes were free (assuming the base vehicle had a subframe). Original equipment is a very heavy cast arrangement, TTE replaced the OE setup with chrome molly tubing which weighs about a 1/4 of the original cast subframe setup.

I'd hardly call the suspension on the TTE cars "regular"! It bares no resemblance to any car Toyota has produced for the street.

The stock subframe is not cast. It is formed sheetmetal.
