1992 GL Corolla engine swap

Postby thedrunkfish » Sun Mar 16, 2008 7:08 pm

Just purchased a 92 gl corolla station wagon with a 4AFE engine. As the BZ touring was a bit too expensive. How difficult is it to transplant in a 4AGE, ive been led to believe any A series engine should fit but it will depend on the engine series im guessing. I know it will need a different flywheel and clutch setup, unsure about the gearbox, also im thinking there may be ecu issues.
Any guidance would be appreciated. Cheers

4age will bolt straight in. Your 4afe C52 gearbox will bolt up aswell, but flywheel and clutch will need to be changed I think, as 4age is 8 hole and 4afe is 6 hole.

Use the 4age ecu, just rewire the dash loom to the 4age plug. Is not hard to do, took me a couple hours max.

Fuel pump relay will need to be re-wired

There are probably a couple more things, but thats all i can think of now

I strongly recommend buying a complete donor car with a 20v motor. This means you will have every little bracket, plug and hose that you will need.
Also you will have the bigger brakes, rear disk brakes and the higher rate springs and swaybar. I'm sure you can buy a complete car with the engine still running for less than $500 ( mine was $300 I think).

Bought a damaged 1992 AE101 Trueno 4age 20v silvertop C52 gearbox
Bought an AE101 Marino 4afe C50 that had a seized engine.
We (me and Ewan, 10k20v) bolted the whole front subframe and suspension from the Trueno into the Marino (brakes, suspension, gearbox and motor) also swapped the brake booster and bias valve.
Also swapped the rear brake,s handbrake cables, hubs and swaybar across. Should have swapped the steering rack so the 20v steering vacuum lines had somewhere to plug into (it runs fine with these lines just blocked off!).
The 20v engine loom plugged straight into the Marino body loom. There was even an unused plug on the Marino loom just waiting to plug into the 20v aircon idle up valve!!!
Only wiring needed was a jumper wire from the 20v loom to the fuel pump relay wiring so the pump worked correctly.
Easy! But sure helps to have the complete donor vehicle!
Total cost $1200!!!!! for everything including the cars!

Let me know if you want more details.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

How did your conversion go? Was it worth it i'm thinking of doing the same thing.

I have an AE92 Gti would you know if a 93 wagon with a 20v would go better?

I know i'd be heavier but was hoping the stronger engine would balance it out. I have a Carib BZ wagon but am not allowed to do track duty in it.
