beams 3sge sump

Postby nz_climber » Tue Mar 18, 2008 3:46 pm

Hi all

My question is, can a normal 3s sump be fitted to a beams 3sge? Of course it would have to be modified to suit rwd (upright format) as I am having problems with the height of the standard altezza sump and also how far it sits forward of the main crank pully (hits on a chassis rail)

Would be keen if someone has some pics of other 3s rwd sump options and some measurements?

The other option is dry sumping.. (expensive)

btw: engine is going in a lotus 7 replica

use a 1s or 2 sump but you would have to modify the oil pick or you could use the last 5sfe oil pump which had the crank shaft angle sensor mounted in pump to make it easier

if you go that way also use the 2 s oil pick up as well ,3 questions are you going to run the 6 speed as 4 bolts from the back of sump attach to it
next 1 you might have to make up a windage tray as well and also on the 2s sump which is rwd you will need to fully baffle the sucker
as a side note will the plenum fit into the car if not i make inlets to suit 20v quad throttles

Cheers for the info, yeah I will be running the 6 speed.. will look into other s series sumps..

Also how much for the adapter to 20v throttle bodies? and what computer would you use to run it? link? I know a autronic's and motecs do - but they are really expensive

cheers again for the info.. At this stage most likely be going dry sump, as this will get the engine well down in the chassis and clear of any chassis rails, plus be a safe and good platform to build a quick engine on - so will keep the plenum for now, and hopefully stock ecu, as that stuff will be easier to change later in the build..

well if you need any parts for these engines i make inlets ,50mm quads to bolt to inlet 2 stage injector units billet cams with 540 thou lift and 511thou
also longer forged rods and 13.5 to 1 comp pistons
and the real bonus is i still use vvti on inlet and exhaust with pump fuel and are near the 300 hp mark

I have a couple of sumps (keeping them sorry) and from my comparisons:
Beams engines have crank angle sensor - this fits on the oil pump sort of.
If you go for an earlier sump then there will be a gap between sump and oil pump (and vice versa, older pump with newer sump=gap)
I think the beams oil pump has a thicker rotor to deliver the extra oil to work the VVT cams.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Bite the bullet and go dry sump from the start, a friend of mine has a fraser 7 with a 3s in it and they had heaps of problems with oil supply because they had to use a cut down/modified sump to fit the engine in the chassis. After going through several engines they've finally put a dry sump on it and eliminated the cause of many run bearings and frustrating days at the track.

cheers for that everyone, I will be installing a dry sump, its the easiest way around alot of problems.. And also like postfach said it will avoid problems further down the line.
