Boost control solinoids

Postby method » Wed Mar 19, 2008 4:38 pm

How do you know the solenoid is any good and wont stick open or something horrible like that.

Easiest design i can think of is a coil over type spring that holds the solenoid closed and a electromagnet that will open the solenoid. simply pulse the magnet and the solenoid will open and close rapidly. If it stops going solenoid remains closed.

There are some cheap ones on trademe, not sure if i should buy it or not.

I've had a gizzmo ibc before, they are great units but i want to spend sub $100. Boost tap may be my best option.

these HDI products are better than i thought. my electronic boost controller ($250) turned up and it had the same high quality brand solenoid as the most expensive brands. works a treat.

Easy to adjust (High Precision 'flow control' pneumatic valve)

Defeats the purpose but something to do with that.

for $10 more you can get the TypeR version which looks fully ajustable

Look at the other listings.

I bought a HDI ebc, the electronic one with a lo and hi boost knob.
I think its crap, lo boost can only go to 15psi max, high boost cant control my boost properly after 25psi, if i turn the knob like anotehr 1mm from 25psi setting it sometiems goes to 27 sometimes goes to 26 sometimes 28, its not consistant at all trying ot control after 25psi.

My closed loop boost tap setup is still the best, where ever I set it stays there solid as! (but wont work on internal wastegates with the diapham setup only external wastegates)

mechanical FTW

Yeah, cheers. You can get those taps you can make closed loop for about $50 off trademe. Will probably steer that way.

If your controlling it with your ecu you can try using one of the stock electronic solinoids from turbo legacys - using on on my car and it holds perfectly on a range of boost settings.

Ive had good sucess with the GFB atomic Manual Boost Valve, I run 15PSI, and it hold steady with no creeping spikes, etc. Under $100

Hmm im having problems with my boost tap. Standard wastegate spring is 10psi, about 8psi at intake manifold. I tried upping it to 12psi intake manifold and its rock solid.

Unless i say have the car in third gear at 5,000rpm and floor it. Boost will shoot right up to boost cut before leveling off. Most of the time cutting :S

Maybe i should try setting it up as a closed loop setup? it is just bleeding at the moment.
