Exhaust Materials

Postby solitaire » Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:12 am

Hiya, I had a bit of a search but could not quite answer my question.

Any reason why i would want to have a stainless downpipe and mid pipe over mild steel? Would rust be an issue at that heat?

Bling factor, that'd be about it. Mild steel will be fine.

Cheers Chaps :D

Yeah bling is not really an issue for me... was only concerned if mild steel was inferior or whatever...

Cheap stainless has a tendency to "flake" away on the inside in really hot environments.....

Stainless has different heat cycling than mild steel, it tends to fluctauate in temperature more where as mild steel retains the heat longer. Basically it means stainless is more prone to cracking than mild.

If you want to avoid the rust then send your part off to HPC Coatings in Auckland and they will bling up your pipe, you can also opt for the high performance coating, this will sheild your engine bay from the dump pipe heat and help reduce under hood temperatures, also helps keep exhaust gases hot and therfore faster moving to help get them out of the exhaust quicker.
