A Q for the auto sparkies

Postby .: SR Coupe :. » Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:58 pm

Hey,

Have done a search but not come up with what i was after.

The deal: AE82 4age bluetop in a KE36, just trying to wire up the electric fan with a Narva diode relay.
Having issues getting the power supply for the relay, when i take it from any ACC power source it buzzes the flasher unit out when key turned to ACC and makes it tick a gazillion times a second. As soon as the relay circuit is diabled, it stops, but obviously want my fan running off ACC power rather than constant battery power. So how do i stop this happening !?

All i can think of is something to do with current, mybe drawing too much or something?
Someone must have had similiar problems with old cars before?

Thanks for any help

i had a simalar problem, check the relay is not stuffed i replaced it and the prob went away, other wise a short in the ign system is a real possibility.

how are you switching the relay? with a fan/temp switch earthing it, or just by switching it when the ign is turned on and running the fan constantly?

if its the second, why not switch it with any 12v ign source, instead of an acc source?

little_devil Im switching it with the fwd temp sensor earthing it out, (the housing has been earthed, i got tripped up on that one as well haha). I dont want to be running it all the time really

tsoob, it is new but i guess could be worth trying another one....is the diode one the way to go? When looking for a short is that just frayed wires, poor connections etc?

thanks

Diode ones are a PITA, as they are polarity conscious,

get one with a resistor instead.

Thanks Matt ill look at doing that, is that likely to cause the problem i'm having?

Also while your their does this sounds correct wiring-
87=acc power
86=ignition power so acc again
30=output to fan
85=tempsensor signal
87a=not used

what do you think?
thanks for your help

wiring for the relays i've used is as follows:

87 = 12v+ output to fan
86 = 12v+ ign input to relay
30 = 12v+ batt input to relay
85 = earth signal (connect to temp sensor/switch)
87a = can be used as second 12v+ output

then connect the - terminal of the fan to an earth. when the ignition is switched on the relay will have power etc, but it won't be on until the temp sensor switches it at the appropriate temperature. those single pin temp sensors switch things differently though i think, so i might be wrong with the above, but thats how i've always set mine up when using 2 pin temp sensors.

hope this makes sense :?

Yeah mate makes sense, ill give that setup a go and see what happens.

I had been taking both my 12v feeds for the relay from the same place, perhaps i do need to have one too battery and one too 12v acc source, maybe this is the reason why my flasher box hada mental?!
thanks for your reply, ill let you know.

Id be interested to hear other opinions if they differ

Ok so wired up as above and seems to be correct,

However think the temp sensor switch is faulty as its not sending a signal even when car gets to the 80 or so degrees thats ment to trigger it.

Going to replace the sensor (and thermostat at same time) and should see me right?!

replaced sensor and still is not switching the fan !

The thermostat housing is earthed to the block as it should be, can anyone tell me why i am not getting the trigger to switch my relay on? :(

the pic in my original post isnt there, but it was the small round yellow/creamy single pin plug... hope that helps.
