Poor fuel consumption?

Postby Quirky » Wed Apr 09, 2008 2:08 am

My AE101R Corolla with the 4afe only gets 480km out of a tank or close to it.
I filled up today with 95 (always 95) and it measured 36 litres (costs $53AUS).
So im getting 480km to 36 litres. I manged to get 250km to the first quarter, but after the halfway mark i started to get really poor mileage.
I use to get nearly 600km to the tank in my old FXGT on 95.

Whats causing this relatively poor fuel consumption?
Seems like im missing out on 100km which is 3 days of extra driving for me
Mind you, when i was running it on 91, i was only getting 350km a tank.

Could be a stupid question, but did you put more litres than 36 into your FXGT after 600km, than in your 101 after 480km?

480k out of 36 litres is very good economy, especially if that's around town @ 13km per litre.

600k out of 36 litres would be approaching miracle territory in an fxgt around town @ nearly 17km per litre, considering I get 15km/l (highway) out of a 1300cc Starlet, and my best was 20km/l (highway) out of an 850cc Mira.

Only true way to measure mileage is to do it on a full tank.

half way on your fuel guage doesn't always mean half a tank left which is why you are wondering about poor economy on the 2nd half of the tank of gas 8)

It's probably also due to the fact it's costing more and more to fill the car up due to petrol prices, so people seem to be looking more at the fuel economy and are expecting better than normal economy to off-set the extra cost of fuel.

My AE92 FXGT got 570km out of a tank once, so that's was pretty sweet. That was driving non stop from Hamilton to Wellington though, so that'd have a lot to do with it.

Carpet Burn got in excess of 16km/L on 95 when we headed down to Welly a couple of weeks ago in her 220,000km old silvertop AE101 FXGT, mostly open road but with some town driving chucked in for good measure

from whats been said and my own experience, you're getting about what you should be.

600kms + per tank is usually only on long trips with decent stretches of constant speed and throttle control.

the best I ever got was 720km off 42L in my RunX... that was driving at 90km/h most of the way... usually at 110-120km/h it got ~600km on a trip, and 450 round town(350 if I drove it hard).

Seeing as im now in Cairns
The trip to school means i have to drive 20km on the highway.
40km total.
Hardly any stopping and speeds from 80 to 100.

I thought i should be getting more milegae seeing as i drive 40km on the highway everyday.

The other bad thing was when i went for a drive to townsville.
A city 4hrs south of Carins, about 400km.
And i got there with the fuel warning light on.
Thats pretty much 4 hrs nonstop driving.

When i stop the car, there appears to be a small amount of leaking, dont have a clue what it is but it only leaks if i have been using the aircon. Something to do with the aircon gas condensing?

Im pretty sure that is just moisture accumulating on the cold parts of the aircon... nothing to worry about... been happening on my cars since ive had them

If you worried about your consumption i would check your plugs, air filter, alignment and tyre pressures... but i get about 500k's/40l out of my 4afe wagon... so i dont think you are way off...

I do drop down to 460/470ish if ive been slamming the aircon...

What speed do you drive to work? Once you go over 100kmh the fuel consumption increases exponentially.

The leak is just water vapour from the air condensing, nothing to worry about.

As for your fuel consumption, don't forget that Aussie fuel can contain up to 10% ethanol, which will result in poorer fuel economy

have you seen under the car recently? the cars tank holds 50 litre, i'd be seeing if the tank has been hit from underneath which is limiting how much it can hold.

and place a wooden block under your accelerator making it only possible to use 25% throttle.

Id just do your basic maintenance, check your alignment and make sure your tires pressures are fairly high

Replace the spark plugs, get the timing checked and tweaked if required.
Air filter clean or replace and make sure the O2 sensor isn't stuffed. I've known of cars that started to drink the gas a bit more, because the O2 sensor was on the way out.
