Rebuilding gearboxs

Postby Adamal » Wed Apr 16, 2008 2:15 am

Got a daily driver which has a bit of a crunchy 2nd gear.
I was thinking of buying a gearbox and refitting it with new syncro's and then whacking that on.
Now, I know very little about gearboxes, so what I'm wanting to know is, is this an economically viable option? Eg, would a 3SGE manual box cost around the $50-$100 mark, and then a set of syncro's around $100-$200? Or is there a much larger amount involved?
I'm also guessing it'd be best to get a specialist involved, or would it be something that you'd be able to figure out with a bit of common sense?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Try changing the oil if you want a quick fix, some gearbox oils are highly advanced and have additives that can eliminate syncro problems. I had a 2nd gear syncro crunch as well but I used Redline Shockproof gear oil and the problem stopped immediately. This is probably not a long term fix but its worked in my rally car and that box gets a thrashing.

About $100 per gear for the syncro's,

So I should probably get used to double clutching then?

Need a few specialized tools such as a press and a bloody good set of pullers.
Cheaper and a lot less hassle to just buy another one.
